2 Overview Goal-The objective of the team during Senior Design I is to evaluate the feasibility of the aforementioned six concepts from the perspectives of constraints, resources, economics, scope, and technology. The selected large scale project will become the subject of a detailed technical report for senior design II. The selected small scale project will become the subject of a technology demonstration project for senior design II. Customer Needs Requirements

3 Sub Concepts Technology Demo Photovoltaic (PV) Bio-diesel
Wind Solar Light Report Energy Audit Water Cooling System Alternative Energy

4 Concept Definition –Biodiesel
Sub-Team Chris Chaput Scott Rishell Jeff Hoover Idea To use RIT dining facilities existing waste vegetable oil (WVO) in producing usable biodiesel for campus vehicles To save $$ in amount of used diesel fuel Provide certain educational benefit of classes learning from example

5 Process Flow of Oil on Campus to Create Biodiesel for RIT Vehicles
Work input via transportation of WVO Work input required to dispense chemicals into proper containers Gracies Commons Receptacles transported to central repository near biodiesel station Receptacles transported to central repository near biodiesel station Removal and replacement of hazardous chemicals Switch on the processing unit Oil from fryers put into collection receptacles Crossroads SAU Caf Methanol measured out according to pH reading and added to defined container RITz Lye measured out and added to defined container Processing of oil to create biodiesel within processing station Disposal of waste products created by biodiesel process Fuel dispensed via fuel pump into RIT diesel vehicles Periodic maintenance and cleaning

6 Processor Comparison Selection
Too Small

7 Rough Financial Requirements
Processor Unit = $3K Shipping = ~$500 Operation Depends on how much time it requires of a person per batch weekly (~1.5 hrs) Accessories 2x55gal drums = $50 each (new) ->$100 Optional Electronic pH tester = $50 Misc. and unforeseen expenses: $150 Total = $3800

8 Summary A Biodiesel processor can pay for itself in little over 2 years in fuel savings Serves as an example of alternative fuel in use Product is cheaper when WVO is collected in greater quantities.
