1 Growth: Changing the Conversation
In the era of Race to the Top, the major mandate for student growth measures was to use them in accountability frameworks. As we enter a new era under the Every Student Succeeds Act, we are looking at ways that student growth measures can best be used to inform instructional practices. Daniel Mix Associate Vice President, Assessment Curriculum Associates 2017 National Conference on Student Assessment, Austin, Texas

2 Background i-Ready Diagnostic is A K-12 Computer Adaptive Assessment in Reading and Mathematics Focuses on providing teacher friendly reports with actionable information. Pinpoints student ability level whether the student is below level, on level, or above level. Connected to i-Ready instruction, which are on- line instructional modules.

3 The Vertical Scale Item level difficulty, student proficiency estimates, and indicator difficulty levels are all put on the same scale.

4 Future Growth Model Regression-based model that will predict student growth based on Fall scale score placement category. Can be used to determine how much more to increase the intensity of intervention to meet goals. Can be used to predict whether and when students are on track to be proficient over a number of years. Can be used to determine how difficult certain goals may be to attain.

5 Future Growth Model – Quantitative Conversation
A Grade 4 math student who scored 442 placed in Level 3, and needs to reach 473 to hit proficiency by the end of the year. The conditional mean of growth is 20 scale points for students who placed in this level, and the student needs 31 points to hit 473. The 31 points would be at the 75th percentile of growth for this student. To get to advanced the student would need 75 points, which would put the student well above the 90th percentile of growth.

6 Future Growth Model – Skill Centric Conversation
What skills does the student know now? What skills will the student know if growth is as expected? What skills will the student know if growth is such that the student becomes proficient by the end of the year? What skills will the student know if growth is such that the student becomes advanced by the end of the year?

7 The Student’s Current Status
White – Student is just beginning in the skill, or has not had instruction in that skill Yellow – Student is progressing in the skill Green – Student is secure “proficient” in the skill Skill Select the proper operation to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. Solve problems involving partitioning in equal groups, including identifying the remainder. Identify multiples of whole numbers with products to 100. Solve problems involving sharing equal groups, including identifying the remainder. Solve a division problem by rewriting it as an unknown factor problem. Identify factor pairs of whole numbers up to 100. Write and solve two-step real-world problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Write and solve number sentences with variables to determine the answers to multi-step real-world problems using the four operations and whole numbers. Multiply or divide whole numbers to solve real-world problems involving multiplicative comparisons. Find and explain arithmetic patterns such as every multiple of 5 will end in either a 0 or a 5. Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, and represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations. Determine whether a whole number from 1 to 100 is prime or composite. Interpret the remainder in a real-world problem involving division of up to a three-digit number by a one-digit number.
