Mestizos – people with one Spanish and one Native American parent Peninsulares - People born in Spain; they were landowners, government leaders, and church leaders in New Spain Creoles – People born in New Spain whose both parents were Spanish. Spanish priests were sent to the Americas to convert Native Americans to Christianity They created missions that housed Native Americans and teach them a more European lifestyle

Conquistadors - soldiers sent to explore and conquer new lands better weapons and animals never seen by Natives Natives had no immunity to European diseases Conquistadors had the right to demand taxes and labor from Native Americans. This forced many Native Americans into a form of slavery

Native Americans were used as labor in mines to dig for silver and other precious metals. They were also put enslaved on plantations growing sugar cane and tobacco
