Kiwanis International New Member Orientation A thorough orientation is an important member retention tool. The facilitator should save this presentation electronically, make changes to the slides to fill-in-the-blanks or tailor the slides to meet the club’s needs and save it again electronically. If additional slides need to be added, please maintain the integrity of the Kiwanis Graphic Standards by using the “Insert New Slide” function. These notes pages (Instructor’s Guide) are for the facilitator’s use only. First club in started in1915: Detroit, Michigan 8,400 Kiwanis clubs in 72 countries Motto is Serving the Children of the World Organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA “Kiwanis International has an impressive history. While our club directly impacts our community, there are more than 8,000 clubs worldwide doing the same. Together, our efforts are changing the world we live in. Our organizational impact includes: Kiwanis clubs distribute more than $107 Million annually. Kiwanis members perform more than 6.2 million service hours each year. More than 150,000 service projects are performed annually by Kiwanis clubs.”

The Club Experience Everything we do starts at the club level:
Leadership Fellowship Service “But the club is the basic unit of Kiwanis. Everything we do starts with the club. We are developing leaders in community through our club. Our community service takes place through our club. The fellowship we enjoy begins in our club.”

About Our Club Our Chandler Club was chartered on April 9, 1957
Division number: K2518 District number: K25 Club number: K04767 We have 18 members (as of October 1, 2016) – now 19! We have weekly meetings, held every Tuesday from Noon-1:00pm at IHOP, Arizona Ave and Ocotillo, Chandler Board Meetings are 2nd Tuesday each month “Our club is brand new as of July 9th 2009.” “Our meetings are held…”

About Our Club Last year (FY 2015-16), our club:
Contributed over $23,600 to our Community and Kiwanis Missions Delivered over 1,000 service hours Benefitted many youth and children in our Community and Globally “Our club makes an annual impact in this community in terms of the money we spend and the service hours we provide. Last year, we benefitted youth and children through our service projects and programs and the money we contributed.”

The focus should not be on the number or name of the committees, but rather on the work the club needs/wants to accomplish. Describe what each committee does. Club committees are where the work gets done and relationships are forged. Encourage new members to find a committee that is of interest to them and encourage them to participate.

Organizational Structure
Our club is governed by a Board of Directors which consists of the club officers and additional directors. Our club is 1 of 7 clubs in Division 18 (Inter-Club, Inner Circle) of the Southwest District (LT. GOV. is Dawn Lang) Our district holds an annual convention each August Our club is a member of Kiwanis International, a worldwide organization governed by a board of 20 trustees and holds an annual convention each June or July (PROVIDE A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS STRUCTURE. DON’T OVEREMPHASIZE THE DETAILS OF THE STRUCTURE AS THIS TENDS TO BE SOMETHING MANY NEW MEMBERS DON’T CARE ABOUT.)

Club Administration Club bylaws define our club structure and operation. Our club membership votes on: Election of club officers and directors Amendments to club bylaws The Board of Directors Determines club policies Approves club projects Sets and approves the club’s budget

Finances/Budgeting Administrative Account
Income from club dues, new member fees and misc administrative fundraisers like 50/50 raffle. Service Account (Community Welfare Foundation) Income from public fund-raising projects or contributions and cannot be used to pay administrative expenses of the club. “In the United States, Kiwanis clubs are classified as 501c (4) and dues/donations are not tax deductible as a charitable contribution. Club Dues and Fees Our annual club dues amount is $ for FY (Spouses pay no Club Dues & Lifetime Members pay no KI or SWD dues) $52.00 are Kiwanis International dues $40.00 are Southwest District dues $4.00 Directors and Officers Insurance $13.00 provides General Liability Ins for clubs activities $8.00 is a subscription to KIWANIS magazine $38.00 is retained by our Club for Administrative costs (REVIEW THE FINANCIAL COSTS OF MEMBERSHIP AND HOW YOUR CLUB BILLS ITS MEMBERS.)

Kiwanis Foundations Kiwanis has several 501(c)(3) charitable foundations which support the work of the organization Kiwanis International Foundation Southwest District Foundation Chandler Community Welfare Foundation “The Kiwanis International Foundation will solicit funds directly from our members (via postal mail). Share with the new member any other ways that the club also supports the Kiwanis International Foundation. Our local clubs work to help communities. The Kiwanis International Foundation helps on a global scale. The work the International Foundation funds provides the recognition and publicity local clubs need for recruitment and retention (example IDD). Through our existing clubs in areas affected by natural disasters, the foundation is able to provide quick and relevant support to those devastated. The Kiwanis International Foundation provides money for matching scholarships to Key Clubs and Circle K clubs in your district. The foundation provides grants to clubs and districts to provide service to children. The foundation provides funds to support Kiwanis Family Programs at the Interational level.” (Differentiate between the Kiwanis International Foundation and district/club foundations.)

Enriching Young Students “Kiwanis uses the term ‘Service Leadership Programs’ to describe a variety of Kiwanis-branded programs that provide leadership development and character education experiences to children, teens and young adults. These three programs are designed to help elementary school children grow as young leaders. K-Kids teaches children to be leaders by learning to help others. Terrific kids teaches children to be good citizens by setting, working toward and achieving goals.
