1 Week 2-7 Cell Processes

2 Mind Stretcher DNA of _____________ is found as a circular ring.
Most of a cell’s ATP (energy) is made and stored in the inner membrane of the ___________________. The outermost layer of a plant cell is the ________________ and is responsible for strength and support. Prokaryotes mitochondria cell wall

3 Cell Processes Notes

4 Background Info Molecules are in constant motion, and tend to move from areas of higher concentrations to areas of lesser concentration.

5 Define Diffusion The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of less concentration. Spray air freshener and do food coloring.

6 Draw a diagram of an example of diffusion we saw in class.

7 Define osmosis The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.

8 Define osmosis

9 Define osmosis In this picture a red blood cell is put in a glass of distilled water (all water with no salt or sugar in it).  Because there is a higher concentration of water outside the cell, water enters the cell by OSMOSIS.  In this case too much water enters and the cell swells to the point of bursting open.  In the end pieces of cell membrane are left in the water.

10 Selectively permeable membrane
A membrane that allows only certain materials to cross it Materials pass through pores in the membrane

11 OSMOSIS

12 Why are osmosis & diffusion important?
All living things have certain requirements they must satisfy in order to remain alive – maintain homeostasis These include exchanging gases (usually CO2 and O2), taking in water, minerals, and food, and eliminating wastes. These tasks happen at the cellular level.

13 Passive Transport Osmosis and Diffusion are types of passive transport; this means that they do not need energy to move. (happen naturally)

14 Active Transport This requires energy to move molecules from low concentration to high concentration. (moving against what is natural) Endocytosis: the process of bringing a particle into the cell Exocytosis: the process by which a particle is removed from the cell

16 Summarizer Toss the summarizer ball

17 4 – 2 – 1 Generate 4 words that you think capture the most important points of this lesson. (NO VOCABULARY TERMS) Share with your neighbor and put a check next to the words you have in common. Determine 2 words that you both agree capture the most important points of the lesson and circle them. SUMMARIZER – do on ¼ sheets of paper and spray glue to back blue paper. Each pair shares with another pair their 2 words. Decide as a group the 1 most important point of the lesson. Write this word on the back.

18 Evaluate and Reflect on Test
On the scantron write: “Evidence of S7L2b Check Yes if you got 80 or above ____ Yes _____ No” Review all missed questions. On your own paper list: 3 concepts this test proves you understand. 3 misconceptions you had on this test. Write a one paragraph reflection explaining: Why this grade reflects your learning. How you could improve this grade.

19 TRAFFIC LIGHT I will STOP doing… I will THINK about…
SUMMARIZER I will START doing…

20 Mind Stretcher high Materials move from areas of _______ concentration to areas of ___________ concentration. The Cell membrane is said to be ________________. The process of absorbing sunlight and taking in carbon dioxide and water to make sugar and oxygen is called ____________. low Semi permeable Photosynthesis

21 Cell Processes (preview)
Diffusion: the movement of particles from regions of higher density to regions of lower density Osmosis: the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane. Show brain pop - diffusion

22 Cell Processes (Preview)
Passive Transport: the movement of substances across a cell membrane without the use of energy by the cell. Active Transport: the movement of substances across the cell membrane that requires the cell to use energy. Show Brainpop - passive transport and active transport

23 4 – 2 – 1 Generate 4 words that you think capture the most important points of this lesson. (NO VOCABULARY TERMS) Share with your neighbor and put a check next to the words you have in common. 24 NO Mind Stretcher Get out your homework and check it.
Get out a piece of paper Give yourself a grade and write it on the top of your quiz paper: 1,2, or 3 Put your heading on it. Number 1-5, do not skip lines.

25 Checkpoint 4-2 Oxygen is released during ___________________.
Carbon dioxide is released during ___________________. Cellular Respiration happens in (plant/animal/both type) cells. Mitochondria perform ___________________ to make ATP. Chloroplasts perform _______________ to make glucose.

33 Why are osmosis & diffusion important?

34 Mind Stretcher - Friday
Tommy pours salt on a slug. It shrivels up. Why? Plants draw water up from the soil, through their roots to the leaves. How? A man drinks a gallon of salt water everyday for a week and dies of dehydration. How does this happen? The salt draws water out of the slug. (Osmosis) There is a greater concentration of water in the ground or roots of the plant than in the leaves. This causes water to flow up the plant, called “osmotic pressure”. His organs are around 60% water. Drinking salt water draws water from his organs and into his digestive system. This leads to organ failure through osmosis!

35 Summarizer Osmosis and diffusion are similar in that they both………., but osmosis …….., while diffusion…………………
