3 Who Is Covered? Ontario Association of Basketball Officials & its board OABO members. Sanctioned & Supervised OABO Activities Ontario Association of Basketball Officials Sanctions. Sanction = Approves

4 The Coverages Liability – protects members in the event you are sued in a civil action stating your negligence caused someone bodily injury or property damage (defense & payout). Worldwide coverage for suits brought in Canada Compensatory damages $5,000,000 limit per occurrence, $500 deductible Members – including directors, officers, executive, managers, coaches, officials, employees and volunteers (while working on behalf of the association)

5 The Coverages Errors & Omissions– protects you in the event you are sued for wrongful acts (defense & payout). Includes coverage for Directors & Officers. Civil action Compensatory damages $1,000,000 per occurrence, $500 deductible

6 Sport Accident – coverage for practices, games within Canada only
Out of pocket expenses i.e. drugs, physiotherapy etc. Secondary response plan Various limits Members – those who are ‘in the sport’, during the sport.

Principal Amount $50,000 Fracture Indemnity ,000 Dental Accident ,000 Medical Expense Reimbursement 15,000 Aggregate limit for any one Accident $1,000,000

8 Traveling? Liability coverage travels with you (worldwide) as long as it is a sanctioned OABO activity. Travel Medical (especially for outside of Canada) as organized through OABO. Covers the trip, not just the sport. Many groups now purchasing for travel to other provinces too.

9 How are Claims Handled? Liability – submit any Letters of Intent or Statement of Claims (lawsuits) IMMEDIATELY to OABO Sport Accident – Notification to Pearson Dunn within 30 days Submit Athletic Accident Claim Form within 90 days of injury to Pearson Dunn Insurance

10 Frequently Asked Questions
What if there is more than 1 liability claim during the year --- is there a cap on the amount the insurance company will pay out? No ‘aggregate’ – cap per policy term. There is a limit per occurrence only If I am ‘officiating’ a pick-up game for my son & his friends am I covered? No. Your policy covers OABO sanctioned activities and does not extend to your personal activities.

Are Volunteers covered. Yes. Volunteers are covered for liability, not sport accident. If our member was negligent will the insurance company still cover us? Yes. If there has been an error in action you are still covered. As with any insurance policy intentional criminal acts are not covered.

If I am injured while officiating & require physiotherapy, drugs or an ambulance ride am I covered. Sport Accident policy.

13 Safety Creating a safe environment needs to be considered
BEFORE, DURING & AFTER. EVERYONE is responsible.

Before anyone starts to play a safety review should be done Facility Know your environment Check before starting play. State of the Floor. Is there water on the floor Equipment Nets in good repair, back boards Balls Stop play if a safety issue arises

15 Safety vs. Insurance Any sport involves an element of risk
Safety First…. Always!!! Abide by Ontario Association of Basketball Official’s guidelines. Insurance is never a substitute for safety !!!
