Basic Forms of Energy By: Mary Tweedy Edited by: Addie Garner
2
What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work.
Energy is the ability to cause a change. Energy can change an object’s: motion shape temperature color Energy cannot be created nor destroyed 2 2
3
Energy is all around us! You can see energy as light from the sun or a lamp. You can feel it as heat warms things up. You can see motion energy every time you move. Using the KWL Chart give examples of energy all around us.
4
You use energy when you:
Take a walk Lift a book Throw a ball Turn on a light Answer your cellphone Listen to music In your journals describe scenarios for each of the kids in the pictures using energy.
5
Basic Forms of Energy Light Sound Heat Electrical Chemical Mechanical
6
What is light? Light is something that allows us to see objects.
Light is a form of energy. Light is produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Read additional information located on pages of ScienceSaurus. Take notes in journal.
7
What is Sound. https://www. pearsonsuccessnet. com/snpapp/login/login
Sound is a form of energy produced by a vibration or a back and forth movement of an object. Sound is a wave of vibrations that spread from its source of its matter. The more vibrations the waves have, the more energy, the louder the sound. The faster the vibrations or the frequency, the higher the sound. How high or low a sound is called the pitch. Read additional information located on pages of ScienceSaurus. Take notes in journal.
8
Heat Energy? Heat energy flows from warmer substances to cooler substances. Heat is transferred from one object to another in three different ways: Conduction Convection Radiation Read additional information located on pages of ScienceSaurus. Take notes in journal.
9
What is Electrical Energy?
A form of energy that is produced when electrons move from one place to another. Electrons are particles that are in the space around the nucleus of an atom. The forces of attraction and repulsion make electrons move. Go to To view Discovery Video Physical Science #’s: 119; 39.
10
Chemical Energy Chemical energy is made when substances react and form new substances. Food, batteries, and fuels such as oil and gasoline are stored chemical energy. Chemical energy can change to: sound light heat electrical motion What is chemical energy? ScienceSuarus p. 258
11
Mechanical Energy Energy can cause motion and create change.
A pencil sharpener A person Walking A ball bouncing A moving car ScienceSaurus p. 286 – Energy changes. Take notes in journals.

Basic Forms of Energy Quiz Time
Energy Forms 1. Sound 2. Electrical 3. Heat 4. Mechanical 5. Light 6. Chemical What Happens? A. Objects warm. Food cooks. B. Lights on. / Machines run. C. Matter vibrates. D. Plants grow. / Humans see E. Moving a stalled car. F. Playing basketball. Evaluation: Match the Energy Forms to the correct What Happens.
