17 Experiencing Volcanoes Close Up
Listening text: Experiencing Volcanoes Close Up Hi, I am jane small. I’ve been a volcanologist for five years but I stilll remember the first time I went into a crater. I was terrified. We were at the top of an active volcano in Alaska. The more experienced people in the group were already on the edge of the crater but I was so anxious, I could not move for a long time. I had to force myself not to panic. Eventually I managed to walk down to the others but I was still terrified.

18 Then I got up the courage to bend over the boiling lava and collect a sample. I was so excited about what I had done and where I was that I forgot my fear. After that I was never as frightened again, although I’m always careful. It was would be very foolish to become careless when you’re standing on a live volcano. Hi, I am Frank Gore. I’ve been studing volcanoes for almost 10 years. The most frightening experience I’ve ever had was while flying over a volcano in Hawaii. I had just

finished making a map of the direction of the lava. Suddenly, the clouds came down really low and the helicopter Pilot couldn’t tell where we were, so she flew down below the clouds, very close to the volcano. We flew between the fiery red lava below and the thick, dark clouds above. I was so nervous my whole body was damp with sweat. I was very relieved when we finally reached our camp. Hi, I am Sarah Tang. I’ve been studing volcanoes for almost twenty years. I’ll never forget the amazing experience I had on a

volcano in New Zealand. I was down in the crater taking measurements. We weren’t expecting any activity from the volcano, so I thought I was safe. Then suddenly, the ground under my feet began to tremble. The trembling got stronger and stronger and after about a minute, a large cloud of steam blew out of the ground. That’s when I realised I was standing on an active volcano. Believe me, I was trembling almost as much as the ground under my feet. I was very worried that the colcano might erupt while Iwas still inside it.
