Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Considerations of Compatibility with v and 11k Date: Authors: Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

2 Abstract Motivation Purpose
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Abstract Motivation As mentioned in recent FR-EM document( r1)[1] , compatibility with the existing standard and its amendments (802.11i/w/s/k/v/u or other TGs) can be also included as one of maintaining user experience(TGah R5), but it is not means that i/w/s/k/v/u shall be used in all the applications. As we discussed about network management of TGah ( r0) [2] last meeting, IEEE v/k or IEEE u may only apply to some specific TGah Use Cases. Purpose This presentation further discusses the requirements for 11v/k features in TGah Use Cases. Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

6 11v/k Related Network Optimization Functions [4]
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 11v/k Related Network Optimization Functions [4] 11v/k Network Optimization Functions Details 11v/k Features 1 Diagnostic and troubleshooting User notifies poor performance, administrator executes “diagnostic” function and receives a user session report, then takes actions to resolve the problem. Event, Diagnostic Reports (11v), Statistics (11k) 2 Network Inventory For user requirement /assets missing/stolen/periodic report, including Manufacturer information and configuration profile Diagnostic Reports (11v) 3 Load Balancing Provides additional information to the STA to help with load-balancing decisions as roaming decisions BSS Transition Mgt, Event Reports (11v), Neighbor, Beacon Report (11k) 4 Location Services Enable E-911 , asset recovery , troubleshooting LCI Request/Report (11v, k) 5 Network Mgt 3rd Party Location User A can query AP for User B’s location within a BSS so that User A can move towards User B and establish a direct link in another band.  LCI Request/Report 3rd Party Location(11v) 6 Efficient Channel Utilization (Cleaning the Air) Using SSID List and Multi-BSSID IE to reduce the channel congestion SSID List, Multi-BSSID (11v) 7 Efficient Power and Channel Management Using Quite Element to prevents administrator from getting false alarms for excessive retries. Enable AP to communicate its power changes to the STA, then prevent the STA connection drops Quiet Element (11k), TPC Request/ Report, Power Constraint (11k) 8 Network “Health” Monitoring Monitor current network load and utilization, gather link quality statistics in known problem areas, in order to stay ahead of demand curves and identify problem areas. Triggered Station Statistics, Event Reporting (11v), Statistics, Link Measurement, Beacon Report (11k) Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

7 Network Optimization Functions for TGah
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Network Optimization Functions for TGah network diagnostic and troubleshooting/Inventory/network “Health” Monitoring Network diagnostic and troubleshooting and network inventory functions are useful for administrator to quickly respond to the poor network performance, by using event/diagnostic Reports (11v) and statistics (11k) features. Network “Health” monitoring function can further help administrator knows network load and utilization at any time, but more features need to be supported. load balancing/ efficient channel utilization/ power and channel management These functions are very useful in large-scale and densely located networks ( e.g. Smart Grid, building, Use Case3 ) to improve radio channel utilization and reduce interference. location services These functions might be used for physical locate the broken/stolen/alarm sensors (especially in uninhabited area) for sensors/property recovery, location based troubleshooting and emergency services. 8 11v Related Power Saving Functions [5]
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 11v Related Power Saving Functions [5] 11v Power Saving Functions Details 11v Features 1 Network Enabled Power Save IT staff configure the network to support additional services that enable longer battery life of end devices. Proxy ARP, BSS Max Idle Period 2 STA initiated Power Save – Wake on WLAN STA sleeps, requests network wake it only for specific traffic types Traffic Filtering Service, WNM Sleep Mode 3 Network Power Save with graceful STA transitions AP notifies STAs that it will be powering-down., STAs can associate to another indicated AP, with minimal disruption and little additional required scanning. BSS Termination 4 Enable STA Power Save for multicast traffic Devices can save more power if devices STA doesn’t need to wake up at every DTIM interval to receive multicast frame. DMS, FMS, Proxy ARP, TIM Broadcast Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

10 Conclusion: compatibility with 11v/k due to TGah Use Cases
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Conclusion: compatibility with 11v/k due to TGah Use Cases Use Case 1 : Sensors and meters For large mount of battery operated sensors /meters are supported, the user and manufacturer want to extend the battery life of end devices as long as possible, only perform essential functions. If 11ah station function is implemented in each wireless sensor controller, then most of IEEE v/k features may not probably be implemented due to higher cost or other reasons, but some of power saving features in 11v may need to be implemented. Use Case 2 : Backhaul Sensor and meter data For 11ah STA is an aggregator of leaf sensors, the information of sensors need to be collected by 11ah STA such as battery power status, location and traffic status , and then 11ah STA reports the information to 11ah AP for network management (e.g. load balance and troubleshooting). Some of IEEE v/k features may be supported by 11ah. Use Case 3 : Extended range Wi-Fi It is an extension of traditional Wi-Fi. Operator need to operate& manage not only 11ahAP, but also 11ah stations by the proxy of 11ah AP , especially for 3b(cellular traffic offloading). Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

11 Next Step Consideration
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Next Step Consideration FR-R5 Maintaining user experience - 11v/k Network operation & management can be considered into two categories: Network Optimization - network diagnostic and troubleshooting/Inventory - load balancing - efficient channel utilization - efficient power and channel management - location services - … Power Saving Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company

12 Next Step Consideration
Month Year doc.: IEEE yy/xxxxr0 July 2011 Next Step Consideration For 11ah applications, power saving is a priority, 11v related power saving scheme should be considered. Proxy ARP, BSS Max Idle Period,“Wake on WLAN ” are considered as essential functions in all 11ah Use Cases. For multicast traffic , scheme of DMS, FMS and TIM Broadcast can save more power for STA. For cost and other considerations, schemes of network optimization in 11v/k need to be simplified, or new schemes might be considered. FR-R7 Enhanced Power Saving Reusing power saving scheme in and 11v as more as possible is a principle. Some modification in 11v and new power saving schemes might be considered due to different 11ah Use cases. Lin Wang, ZTE Corporation John Doe, Some Company
