2 Introductory phrases…
The doctor may begin by asking… What can I do for you today? How can I help you? What seems to be the problem? So, how are you feeling today? What would you like to talk about?

3 Sore vs. ache sore: adjective = to be painful
Ex: my arm is sore / my back is sore / I have a sore leg sore: noun = a painful place or spot on the body Ex: I have a sore on my lip / she has sores all over her arms ache: verb = to feel painful Ex: my back aches / my tooth is aching

4 Some important vocabulary
The doctor will examine you, evaluate your symptoms, (we suffer from or show symptoms) symptom = something that indicates illness and make a diagnosis or diagnose your illness diagnose = find the reason / cause of your illness

5 Diagnosing symptoms The doctor may listen to your heart (with a stethoscope) and order some tests: - a blood test - a urine sample (pee) / a stool sample (poop) - x-rays /

6 Treatment (the doctor will treat you / your illness)
The doctor may prescribe rest or give you a prescription. for medication (pills), the dose / dosage = number of pills to take for some kind of cream, or an injection (a needle / a shot) or she may vaccinate / immunize you against diseases such as Hepatitis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, etc.

7 After the diagnosis… The doctor may refer you (make a referral) to a specialist, such as: allergist: for allergies cardiologist: for heart disease dermatologist: for skin conditions gastroenterologist: for the stomach & digestive system gynecologist: for the female reproductive system / sexual organs hematologist: for diseases of the blood & blood system

8 More specialists… oncologist: for treatment of cancer
ophthalmologist: for the eyes pediatrician: for children psychiatrist: for mental health problems urologist: for the urinary system & male reproductive system

9 Common reasons for visiting the doctor… / Symptoms of illness
I have a fever a fever is diagnosed using a thermometer I threw up / vomited / got sick to my stomach I have diarrhea / the runs I’m constipated noun: constipation = unable to poop doctor may prescribe a laxative
