8 In This Webinar: Why purpose is important for women in their leadership The components of a purpose-driven brand Becoming a purpose-driven leader

9 I. Why is purpose important?

10 Tell us about your research, and what inspired it
Tell us about your research, and what inspired it. What did you discover? My case study research explored the leadership aspirations and learning of diverse women progressing toward top leadership. Women learned to lead by managing challenging situations, relationships and people early in their careers. In addition to having aspirations for senior and executive leadership, women aspired to make a positive impact and influence (purpose) on their organizations.

11 Why is purpose so important for women in their leadership?
Women find work meaningful when it allows them to empower others and be empowered. Purpose positively impacts leadership aspiration since the path to senior and executive leadership in organizations can be an arduous journey beset by challenges and trade-offs. Professional purpose aligned with an organization’s purpose can provide women with the direction and motivation to stay the course in the face of obstacles and career setbacks.

12 Today having a personal brand is not an option
Today having a personal brand is not an option. It is a necessary leadership attribute. Quote: C. Pace Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook

13 “Your brand is your unique promise of value
“Your brand is your unique promise of value. It’s who you are at your ultimate best.” — Cindy Pace

14 What is a purpose-driven leadership brand? (And why might I want one?)
Having a purpose-driven leadership brand is about constantly and consistently exuding who you are at your core. It’s your essence. It consists of who you are now at your core and how you want to be known at your best. Your brand is about how people perceive and experience you.

15 In business, perception plays a big role in seizing opportunities

16 II. The components of a purpose-driven brand

17 Tell us about the leadership brand framework you’ve created.
Expanding on the knowledge of how personal brands are unearthed, I applied this knowledge to developing a framework that centers around purpose. The framework integrates positive leadership and positive psychology concepts. The core components focus on what makes you unique and distinct. It’s about diversity and differentiation.

18 A Purpose-Driven Leadership Brand
Character Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

19 Purpose is a motivator and mindset—the belief that you are influencing something bigger than you.
Quote: C. Pace Oprah Winfrey

20 Leadership Aspirations
Purpose Purpose is “why” do you do what you do. It’s an intrinsic motivator that drives a true sense of value, significance and fulfillment in your work. You feel a sense of calling to make an impact in your work. Purpose is about personal mastery and service to others. Cultivation and pursuit of work by using strengths beyond personal ambition and status. Example: To help people uncover what makes them awesome. Purpose Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

21 Character Values Character values reflect the "real" you — who you are at your core. The positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel and behave. Every individual possesses all 24 character values in different degrees. They are different than your other talent strengths. Can be identified through Values in Action Assessment. My Top 5 - Love of Learning, Creativity, Humor, Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence, Curiosity. Purpose Character Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

22 Strengths According to Gallup, strengths are a combination of talents, knowledge and skills invested that when applied, energize you. Talent, a special or innate ability or aptitude Knowledge, facts, information, and skills acquired through experience or education Skills, a learned ability, coming from knowledge, practice and aptitude, to do something well; expertise My Top 5: Activator (Influencing), Connectedness (Relationship Building), Ideation, Strategic, Futuristic (Strategic) StrengthsFinder 2.0 & Strengths-based leadership Purpose Character Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

23 Leadership Aspirations
Defined by what you want to become, aspiration serves an intrinsic motivator, vision, and direction to grow your career and leadership. Leadership aspiration is the desire to be a leader, willingness to make a difference and including the necessary trade-offs required to lead. Aspiration triggers effort, actions, and persistence to attain a leadership role in an organization. Purpose Character Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

24 Leadership Aspirations
Presence 93% of first impressions are built on how we appear and sound. Only 7% of what we say. The “ABCs of Presence” include our appearance, behavior and communication. Leadership presence comes down to one's ability to convey confidence, credibility and competence consistently in situations inside and outside of their control. Purpose Character Values Strengths Leadership Aspirations Presence

25 Positioning yourself around your purpose, strengths, values, aspirations and presence can provide direction. Even during the toughest storms, these propel you to achieve your career and leadership goals. Quote: C. Pace Christiane Amanpour, CNN Anchor

26 Poll 1: Which element of the framework are you most confident with?
Purpose Strengths Values Aspirations Presence

27 III. Becoming a purpose-driven leader

28 What’s the first step our listeners can take toward becoming a purpose-driven leader?
Purpose ( Why) catalyzes Mission (What). First, identify your why? “Why” do you do what you do? Track what is energizing you at work. Where are you willingly/voluntarily putting in extra time and energy? Where are you adding value? Identify your mission: what’s the impact you want to make? What’s the change you want to see in your organization or on your team? Example: Purpose at Work initiative at MetLife

29 What are some practical actions our listeners can take if they’re just starting out?
See yourself as a leader now. Leadership is an action not a position. Lead from where you are! Deepen your expertise and play to your strengths and purpose drivers. Be an “activator”: break out of your comfort zone and take risks. Proactively look for opportunities to lead, including creating opportunity.

30 What steps can you recommend for experienced leaders?
Be an “influencer”: Seek strategic ways to expand your impact. Focus on the changes you want to see that can add value to your team and organization. Galvanize your network and get things done through others. Be a “motivator”: Seek to inspire and empower others to make a difference. Commit to developing the talent beside and behind you. Make others feel a part of your team and organization.
