To the Students – the purpose of this program is to reinforce and test your understanding of fractions. You will not be doing actual operations with this program, but will cover a variety of areas dealing with fractions. To the Teacher – your job as facilitator will be to see that each example is explained and understood before proceeding to the next slide as well as directing the “class discussion” slides. This program is best suited for use after your unit on fractions has begun. click mouse to continue

5 ~ Directions ~ There are 20 examples to this program. Number down on your paper from 1-20. Each slide has its own set of directions. Write your answers on your paper after you figure out the example(s). When everyone is done with each slide’s question, just click the mouse for the answer. Don’t forget this. Click the mouse to continue when everyone is done numbering their paper.

6 If there are no questions, click mouse for example #1. Enjoy 
One other thing ~ During the course of this slide show you will see some slides that will be called “Class Discussion” slides where no written answer is necessary. Just discuss that particular slide and go on from there. If there are no questions, click mouse for example #1. Enjoy 

7 reminder ~ click mouse for the answer when everyone is ready
Someone please explain this answer, then click mouse to continue. Example #1 What fraction below represents the amount of this object that’s shaded in red? 7/9 4/8 2/3 reminder ~ click mouse for the answer when everyone is ready

8 Someone please explain this answer, then click mouse to continue.
Example #2 Out of all these circles what fraction represents those circles that are not solid lines? 1/3 5/7 or 2/5

9 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
the answer is 1/3 someone please explain why, then click for the next example What fraction, after you reduce it, would represent the number of green stars out of all of these?

10 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
Again…what fraction represents the amount of the circles that spin below? Some of the objects below will spin for a few seconds. What fraction represents the amount of these below that spin? Example #4 the answer is 5/8 someone please explain why, then click for the next example

11 Class Discussion Time #1 Let’s just talk about it.
Why does the diagram on the left have less of its circle shaded in than the diagram on the right?

12 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
the answer is 15/4 or 3 3/4 someone please explain why, then click for the next example What fraction would represent the total amount of smiley faces in these circles?

13 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #7
You will have 4 answers in this example. For each set of fractions name the least common denominator if you were going to add them together. answer to set 1 = 30 Set 1 2/ / /6 answer to set 2 = 28 Set 2 5/ / /2 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #7 answer to set 3 = 36 Set 3 8/ / /3 Set 4 4/ / /15 answer to set 4 = 45

14 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #8
You will have 3 answers in this example. Name the fraction in each set that is ALREADY reduced. Set 1 8/ / /12 Set 2 5/ / /12 Set 3 12/ / /30 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #8

15 Class Discussion Time #2. Let’s just talk about it.
Why can we say that 5/6 of these crayons are not “indian red” color?

16 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #9
You will have 3 answers in this example also. Name the fraction in each set that is NOT YET reduced. Set 1 18/ / /12 Set 2 9/ / /18 Set 3 15/ / /19 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #9

17 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
What fraction below would BEST represent the part of this circle shaded in blue. someone please explain why, then click for the next example 4/ /6 or 7/9

18 Example #10 Which of the fractions below are said to be “improper fractions”? A) 7/ B) 13/ C) 8/8 D) 3/ E) 11/ F) 2/9 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #11

19 Example #11 Which of the fractions below are not equivalent?
A) 3/5 and 9/ B) 4/7 and 8/14 C) 7/8 and 21/ D) 2/12 and 1/6 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #12

20 Example #12 Again ~ Which of the fractions below are not equivalent?
A) 4/8 and 5/ B) 2/3 and 6/9 C) 15/20 and 3/ D) 3/9 and 6/18 Answer : None of them. They are ALL equivalent fractions! if there are no questions, click mouse for example #13

21 Example #13 the answer is any fraction equivalent to ¾
Look at the diagram below. Name two fractions that represent how much of the diagram is shaded in green. the answer is any fraction equivalent to ¾ someone please explain why, then click for the next example

22 Class Discussion Time #3 Let’s just talk about it.
The pictograph below shows how many pages Deann read from her favorite book each day. How many more pages did she read on Friday than on Tuesday? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Each = 6 pages

23 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
the answer is 4/7 someone please explain why, then click for the next example What fraction would represent the number of blue triangles in this set?

24 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
There are 42 word problems to solve. On Monday Anton solved 13 problems. On Tuesday he solved 6 problems and on Wednesday he solved 15 problems. Which fraction represents the portion of word problems Anton solved on Tuesday? the answer is C someone please explain why, then click for the next example A) 1/15 B) 7/15 C) 1/7 D) 3/7

25 someone please explain why, then click for the next example
The school basketball team won a little more than half of the games that they played. Which fraction represents the amount of games won by the school basketball team? the answer is B someone please explain why, then click for the next example A) 11/25 B) 8/15 C) 8/9 D) 1/3

26 Class Discussion Time #4 Let’s just talk about it.
If no pins have yet been knocked down, what reduced fraction represents the number of bowling pins that have a on them?

27 Example #17 10/2 30/5 You will need 2 answers for this example.
Write the whole number “5” as halves Think about this one for a second. They can be done. 10/2 30/5 Write the whole number “6” as fifths if there are no questions, click mouse for example #18

28 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #19
Which of these mixed numbers are not changed correctly into improper fractions? A) 4 1/3 = 13/ B) 7 3/5 = 35/7 C) 3 3/10 = 33/ D) 2 1/6 = 12/6 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #19

29 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #20
Which of these improper fractions are not changed correctly into mixed numbers? A) 20/9 = 2 1/ B) 15/7 = 2 1/7 C) 9/5 = 1 4/ D) 11/3 = 4 1/3 if there are no questions, click mouse for example #20

30 click mouse for one final message
Example #20 Which fraction below is the smallest of all of them? (This is harder than it looks.) 4/6 or 5/8 or 6/9? Actually 5/8 is the smallest. If you reduce 4/6 and 6/9 you will see that they both equal 2/3. When you change 2/3 and 5/8 to the same denominator, 5/8 is the smallest fraction here. click mouse for one final message

31 This program is now finished.
Just for fun ~ what would ½ of ½ of ½ equal? click mouse for the answer the answer is..…one eighth! the end

32 For the teacher Answers for the “Class Discussion” slides are as follows: Discussion #1 – the smaller diagram on the left does not have less shaded in. They both have ¼ of their diagram shaded in. Discussion #2 – there are six crayons in all, five of which are not indian red color thus making the fraction 5/6. Discussion #3 – each star represents 6 books. Tuesday has three stars which equals 18 and Friday has six stars which equals 36. Deann read 18 more books on Friday than on Tuesday. Discussion #4 – the answer is 1/5. There are ten pins, two of which have hearts on them making the fraction 2/10 which is reduced to 1/5.
