Pedro Telles Vitae Civilis Institute

2 5 cross-cutting issues Integration Role of MGs and civil society
Communication Transparency and accountability “Intelligence” for advocacy and campaigning

3 Integration Integration in several ways: SDGs and MDGs
Some countries (including Brazil) and organizations do not support the idea of integrating the processes for both sets of goals Separate processes = reduced commitment, reduced accountability and fragmented resources Go beyong “clichés” and better integrate important issues not much discussed High level political forum Should not only guarantee SD agenda is present in different UN organs, but also work on connecting and integrating the activities of such organs

4 Role of MGs and civil society
Next three years bring unique opportunity to redefine MGs and civil society participation MGs can work on two perspectives: Improve/reform their own space inside the UN system Work on amplifying means of consultation and participation of broad civil society Many important actors are not (and will hardly be) engaged with the MGs Need to listen to grassroots Need to look at innovations being developed at grassroots level Success depends on listening to and engaging with civil society in a broad and effective way

5 Communication Communication as a key issue for mobilization and engagement Need to frame adequately the pathway towards and beyond Evaluate how helpful it is to keep Rio+20 as a strong reference in our communication Focus on the “positive agenda” Many key actors related to the MDGs were not connected to Rio+20 and are still not connected to the post-2015 debates Many actors simply don't understand the process or don't believe that the UN can generate relevant outcomes

6 Transparency and accountability
In 2 ways: Important information is not available (to the majority of people, at least) What are the details and updated information on the group of 30 countries that will work on the SDGs? What will happen with UNEP? Does the UN have a clear and detailed roadmap between here and 2015? Specifically on the new MDGs and SDGs: they must come with strong mechanisms for transparency and accountability at multilateral, national and local level

7 “Intelligence” for advocacy and campaigning
Once we know who's in the “SDGs G-30”, we will be able to draw a map of who are the key actors on the road to 2015 It would be very helpful to have a structured collective plan to gather and share information Actors from the countries of decision-makers will be key What's going on outside the UN?

8 Thanks!
