Writing Using adverbials
2
What are we learning? Today we are going to learn why and how to use adverbials in our writing.

What is an adverb?
4
What Is an Adverb? An adverb tells us when, where, how, in what manner, or to what extent an action is performed. An adverb will typically modify a verb, but an adverb can also modify an adjective or another adverb. Here are some examples of adverbs modifying verbs: When: He ran yesterday. Where: He ran here. How: He ran quickly. In what manner: He ran barefoot. To what extent: He ran fastest.

What is an adverbial?
6
Why do we use adverbials?
We know that Adverbs modify verbs. When an adverb has more than one word, it is known as an adverbial phrase or clause.
7
An adverbial is a word or a group of words that gives more information about the verb or the sentence. An adverbial can be a clause which makes sense by itself, or a phrase which needs to link to a clause. Adverbials answer questions such as: Where? When? Why? How? Where was Cinderella when her Fairy Godmother arrived? She was in the kitchen. When did she have to be home from the ball? She had to be home by the last stroke of midnight. Why did she leave her glass slipper on the step? Because she left in such a hurry. How did the Prince find her? He searched the land until he found the foot that fit.

TASK Highlight all the adverbials (look out for those at the start of sentences – they are fronted adverbials and must be followed by a comma): Sobbing uncontrollably, Lady Camilla threw herself down on her huge bed. Her emerald green dress was torn and dirty where she had been dragged along the ground and she was sore where her necklace had been wrenched violently from around her neck. Hovering in the doorway, Jim did not know what to do to help his mistress. He couldn’t bear to see her so miserable, but he felt as helpless as a kitten. As the pirates made off in the moonlight, he had only caught a glimpse of them. Cunningly, they had got away with the most treasured items from the house, including Lady Camilla’s priceless emerald necklace.
