Requests for absence during term time – Mrs Dean , Upper School Leader, or Mr Nicholson, Head Teacher Please let your child’s tutor know if your child is going to be absent from school for any significant period of time for medical reasons. Please provide medical documents. We can then co-ordinate support. Complete the absence slip in the back of the Learning Handbooks. The tutor will then feed this back to the Year Leader/Attached House Leader. Please do not keep your child off school if they have a sore throat, cough or cold; unless they have a high temperature Promote/incentivise good attendance

11 How we support you and your child with their attendance
We meet with our Attendance Manager on a regular basis to review pupil attendance. Tutors will be calling home if there are any issues with punctuality (non-transport related). Promote/incentivise good attendance

18 Maths set structure Set structure for Maths
Four parallel high ability classes Targeting Higher Maths & Statistics GCSE courses Looking into Further Maths GCSE for most able. Four parallel intermediate ability classes Targeting Higher Maths GCSE course only Two parallel mixed ability classes Smaller classes to accelerate and support pupils Targeting Foundation Maths GCSE course With pathways to Higher Tier

19 Pathways from tier to tier
Maths & Statistics Opportunities are restricted due to the intensive and demanding nature of the course. Predominantly statistics topics in year 10 with Higher maths content in year 11. “Set 2” pupils flourish. The combination of the new maths GCSE and Statistics GCSE provides the best route into A level Maths for our more able “set 1” pupils. We are looking at Further Maths GCSE for our most able pupils. Can place undue pressure on some pupils.

20 Foundation vs Higher pathways
During the year through regular topic tests End of year exams and in year 11. More pupils will be entered for Foundation as the level 5 is ABOVE that of a grade C with trigonometry and more complex problem solving. (Its an intermediate paper). A grade 5 in exam conditions opens the door to the Higher Tier.

21 Mrs Edwards Faculty Leader – English

27 Russian man to undergo world's first full head transplant
Mr Spiridinov, from Russia, suffers from Werdnig Hoffman disease, a muscle wasting condition that seriously diminishes his physical capabilities and left him dependent on a wheelchair. Now he has announced his intention to become the world’s first subject of a full head transplant, so that his brain can be attached to a healthy body. Italian neuroscientist Dr Sergio Canavero claims he can complete the unprecedented procedure in less than a day. The whole process, Dr Canavero says, is “90 per cent” guaranteed to succeed, though he admitted: “Of course there is a marginal risk. I cannot deny that." Other doctors have expressed serious doubts, and, in particular, the likelihood that Mr Spiridinov’s brain will still be functional by the time the surgery is complete.

28 What are the challenges?
All exams at the end of the course – developing resilient learners; Closed books – lots of learning of quotes; Reading material is more challenging: news articles and nineteenth century fiction and also non-fiction texts – developing independent reading skills; No foundation tier – supporting the less able with a structured approach to learning.

29 Internal Assessment Formative Assessment –ongoing classwork, target setting, re-writing, improving; Summative Assessment – at the end of each unit; A GCSE grade 1-9; work kept in folders building up a bank of revision materials and examples; Yr 10 exam – formal setting English Language Paper 2.

30 Mr Green Faculty Leader - Science
Exam board- AQA Courses: Combined Science Trilogy Biology Chemistry Physics Double Award Triple Science

31 Exam Board AQA All pupils are following the same curriculum which will enable them to undertake the separate Sciences (Triple award) or the Combined Science Trilogy (Double Award). There is no controlled assessment (coursework) element (100% weighting on exams), and all exams are terminal. Decisions between triple and double award will be made at the end of the year 10, but pupils will have flexibility to change to double award after the mock exams of year 11. Over the course of this year, pupils will be covering 6 units. These equally cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils who displayed an aptitude towards Science in year 9, and who may be strongly be considering the triple award route are in a class with similar ability pupils. All other classes are mixed ability but smaller.

32 Challenges The majority of mathematical formulae need to be memorised for the exams, only a few are provided on an equation sheet. Far greater emphasis on maths skills (20% across all three sciences) with a noticeably larger amount in Physics (30%). Skills which were assessed during controlled assessment will be assessed within exams, this includes a scientific understanding of a set of ‘required practicals’. Pupils need to take responsibility for trialling a developing a range of revision strategies. There is tracker sheet at the front of their exercise books to support with the recording of this.

33 Support Drop in/ revision sessions before the start of the school day, every Wednesday, in Rm 46 (8:00-8:30) Drop in/ revision sessions after school, every Wednesday in Rm 21 (15:15-16:00) Online textbook ‘Kerboodle’ which all pupils have access to. e-chalk, via the schools’ VLE in the library section, lots of Scientific simulations and interactive activities. Twig, a video clip database, subscribed to by the school which all pupils have access to. Revision guides, large variety on offer which can be ordered through the school, a letter with details of how to do this will follow.
