Tiles-Fe AHCAL “…end of June ’06 the CALICE collaboration is packing up 3 calorimeter prototypes from DESY (D) and NIU (US). Destination: Geneva. Expected duration of the mission: 4 months. ” Scint. Strips-Fe TCMT 110 cm E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

4 Running time granted / given
Some numbers: total data taking time = 36 days granted / 21 days given people on shift ~50 (from all institutes in CALICE) beam duty cycle (during running time) ~ 60% detector up time > 90% (including ECAL + AHCAL + TCMC + DAQ) m + One major de-installation during ATLAS run in H6C 2 periods with different detector installation: Aug.-Sep. – technical installation Oct – installation for physics m We are here m E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

5 The Detectors Installed
The Si-W ECAL: 30 layers of W with variable thickness (~1l) only “upper” two wafer rows equipped The A-HCAL, Scintil. Tiles+SiPM r/o: (15) 23 active layers ~4 l (out of 38 planned) ~5000 channels Aug. installation : coarse segmentation Slabs with 6 Si wafers with 6x6 pads each Oct. installation : fine segmentation 2 cm steel plates ~6500 channels see G. Geyken talk The Tail Catcher (TCMT), Scintil. Strips+SiPM r/o: fully equipped with 16 layers ~5.5 l SiPM = 320 channels 2 / 10 cm steel plates see B. Lutz talk E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

6 The physics installation
ECAL Tail Catcher HCAL Compact installation aimed to tuning of clustering and MC comparison: <10cm between calorimeters, minimum dead material E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

7 Installation challenges
Commissioning of part of the detectors during CERN test beam Commissioning of AHCAL LED monitoring system (see I. Polak talk) First integration of ECAL+HCAL and TCMC Installation geometry optimized on the spot Installation of fast networking / high speed data transfer 1 Gbit switch to CERN, 20Mbyte/s to DESY (see R. Poeshl talk) The noise “fight” ECAL noisy slabs (see A.-M. Megan talk) Modification of HCAL/TCMT VFE electronics (see S. Schaetzel talk) Integration of beam instrumentation E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

8 ECFA workshop - Valencia - 7-11 Oct 2006
The SPS H6 Beam Line Primary beam: p 450 GeV on Be targ. (T4)  secondary beam: e,m,p,p , GeV Beam intensity: up to 108 particles / spill, we used 1-3kHz beam rate Secondary beam pion: no sec. target, Pb absorber to filter electrons Tertiary beamelectron: 3 mm Pb target, no absorber (lower intensity)  responsibility of the users to tune correctly 500m of beam optics and optimize secondary or tertiary beam operation CALICE installation SPS H6 beam line horizontal plane Absorber sec.target vertical plane E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

9 The CERN setup …much more than “just” 3 calorimeters
3x3 10x10 m trigger beam 500 m Steps towards a clean physics data sample: 1) Optimize beam  tune magnets, collimators, secondary trg, abs 2) Separate e/p  Cherenkov detector (for Ebeam < 40 GeV) 3) Itentify beam impact point on ECAL  3 x/y pairs of MWPC with double readout 4) Tag multi-particle events  amplitude r/o of 1cm thick scint. counter (veto) 5) trigger physics with high efficiency  trigger system  Store event by event info from 2) 3) 4) 5) in the common DAQ * all in mm E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

17 Encountered “problems”
Beam / trigger quality During 1st run period: too many multi-particle events ~ 5-10% level can (mostly) be removed offline More time invested in beam tuning understanding and optimization Improved beam quality in the 2nd run period e- 20 GeV E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006 Courtesy of V. Morgunov

18 Encountered “problems”
Temperature gradient in AHCAL During 1st run period max temperature gradient (day/night) 2 oC uniform temperature within the detector layers 2nd run period: more AHCAL layers compact electronics, with less air flow few days after 2nd installation 8 oC longitudinal temperature gradient SiPM amplitude changes as dA/dT = -5%/oK installed cooling fans near VFE electronics temperature stabilized within 2 oC still day/night fluctuations, but manageable E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

19 ECFA workshop - Valencia - 7-11 Oct 2006
Conclusion MC REALITY DATA A calorimeter CONCEPT for the ILC is gaining FORM and CONTENT !!! E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006

20 Outlook / Plan for next run
Next installation with: fully commissioned detectors - 38 layers AHCAL - all bottom slabs in ECAL movable stage for AHCAL  hadronic showers from 0o to 30o Also wanted: Pion / proton separation Low energy hadrons (< 6 GeV ?) The analysis of the data taken will tell us if we “missed” something Very good connection established with the CERN team Proposal submitted for May 2007 for another CERN test period … FermiLab is next at the end of summer 2007 E. Garutti ECFA workshop - Valencia Oct 2006
