 The space race was a long lasting competition, between the years of 1957 to 1975, to be the first to explore outer space.  Often viewed as an extension of the Cold War.

 The United States  This was important to the U.S.  Sputnik sparked them into action.  Felt scared  The Soviet Union  Plenty of good ideas and strategies.  Sputnik threatened the U.S.  Felt superior

The Space Race was important to the United States at this time because of… Blueprint 1: Soviet Union’s victory dealing Sputnik. Blueprint 2: The Cold War and the struggle for world leadership. Blueprint 3: Our leader’s decisions.

 October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union sent satellite into space.  Named Sputnik  This event sparked the space race.

SPUTNIK

 The first artificial satellite  About the size of a beach ball  22.8in. In diameter  183.9lbs.  Orbited the Earth in about 98 minutes

 World leadership was important for both the United States and the Soviet Union.  The two were very defensive towards each other.  They both wanted to have the satisfaction of winning.

 After hearing of the satellite that the Soviet Union sent into space, Americans were fearful that maybe since they had the rockets to send up to space they might have the power to send an atomic bomb onto the United States.  They knew that this would ruin any chance at world leadership.

 John F. Kennedy gave a speech on May 25, 1961.  He said that the United States was falling behind the Soviet Union in technology and he challenged the nation by having said that the United States should have a man safely on the moon and back by the end of the decade

 Americans were ready for this opportunity.  They were willing to give it there best approach.  But the Soviet Union had been ahead by so much now that they were so confident.

 Although the Soviets had been having success with everything else, in 1969 this goal was achieved with Apollo 11 when American; Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon.

“ We have a long way to go in the space race. We started late. But this is the new ocean, and I believe the United States must sail on it and be in a position second to none.”  This quote from President Kennedy shows that he believed in the United States all along.

 Overall it was a fair fight.  The United States started off roughly in the beginning, but pulled themselves together in the end.
