4 Community Profile Vernon was first settled in 1716 and was incorporated as a town in Founded at the start of the Industrial Revolution, the town developed into a major center for the manufacture of textiles. Vernon is a suburban community rich in historical and cultural tradition. The town is 15 miles to the northeast of Hartford and is equidistant between New York and Boston. Today the Rockville section of Vernon enjoys the unique status of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although many of the mills are gone, the area remains an active urban center. Once known as rural Vernon, it is now best described as a suburb of Hartford and part of the Tri-Town area of Vernon, Ellington, and Tolland. Although rural areas still exist, Vernon today has a population of over 30,000 residents living in over 13,000 housing units.

5 The Position This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced administrator interested in team management. The Vernon School system, made up of seven schools with a student population of 3,440, is seeking applicants for an assistant superintendent to join an administrative team consisting of a superintendent, a director of pupil personnel, school principals, a director of business and finance in charge of business operations, and subject area coordinators.   Responsibilities will include: general administration, curriculum and instruction, all program evaluation and accountability, community relations, staff development, negotiations and the evaluation and supervision of staff.

6 Qualifications Connecticut State Department of Education administrative certification 092 Five (5) years’ successful experience as an administrator Advanced graduate study in administration and supervision and/or curriculum development Experience in curriculum review, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation Experience in adult learning theory and professional development Experience in staff supervision and evaluation Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong interpersonal skills Other attributes and skills as deemed appropriate and necessary

Purcaro, Director of Business and Finance Vernon Public Schools educates its student population of 3,440 in grades PK-12 which includes five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Policy is governed by the Vernon Board of Education, a nine-member elected body. The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools. The operating budget for the school year is $48,180,997.

Compensation Package The salary range for the school year is $124,000 to $139,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package.
