1 RAS 2009-2001 EZSombrito PNRI, PHI
Marine Program CONCEPT PROPOSAL RAS EZSombrito PNRI, PHI

2 Outputs Set of manuals and handbooks
Documentation of case studies, demonstrations, etc. Regional Network of consultants and service providers to interphase with regional/international/local environmental bodies

3 Common Goal in the Region
sustained and effective action to deal with all land-based impacts upon the marine environment, specifically those resulting from sewage, persistent organic pollutants, radioactive substances, heavy metals, oils (hydrocarbons), nutrients, sediment mobilization, litter, including physical alteration and destruction of marine habitat and resources.

4 Why is this goal more important for the region?
Rich in biodiversity 2/3 of of world’s biological resources are in this country Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea More coastline than any other regions of the world rapid population growth especially in the coastal region increasing industrial expansion growth in trade in fisheries resources with expansion of aquaculture production intensified land-based activities, including deforestation, mining and agriculture

5 Title Regional harmonization of capacities and capabilities in the application of nuclear-based techniques in marine and coastal zone pollution studies and its integration with marine pollution management activities

6 Objectives To harmonize capacity and capabilities in the region in adopting indicators and techniques based on NATS that will assist in minimizing public health and safety risks directly or indirectly associated with land-based, coastal and ocean activities To integrate these indicators and techniques in marine resources management activities locally and in the region

7 Rationale disparity among countries of the region in their capacity to apply these techniques. the nuclear - and isotope- based techniques are rarely, if at all, adopted or integrated in marine and coastal zone mamagement activities.

8 Strategies case studies of improved understanding of the marine and coastal systems to allow the better selection of more cost-effective indicators using NATs; demonstrations of the application of more sensitive, more specific and, if possible, less costly, detection and observations techniques based on NATs; integration of real-time measures (GIS techniques) and more powerful modeling techniques to allow quicker capture and analysis of data; the use of visualization techniques in data presentation that will allow more ready use by managers; selection of nuclear and isotopic-based Indicators that will lead to better reporting and communication relevant to coastal zone and ocean management;

9 Demand –driven approach
establishment of a regional network (espousing nuclear and isotopic-based techniques) to integrate with the country’s local environmental agency and with international and regional bodies in the attainment of the goal of sustainable marine resources in the region. Identification of Centers of Excellence (Regional Resource Units), roles and functions
