About 4.6 billion years ago the solar system was formed. The Solar System includes eight planets. There are about 200 billion stars in the solar system.

2. The Sun The Sun takes up about 99.86% of the Soar System.
The Sun has a measurement of 1,392,000 kilometers (865,000 miles) wide. That is BIG!
The Sun is 27,000,000 Fahrenheit (15,000,000 Celsius) * this is very hot.

3. Mercury Some areas of Mercury have steep cliffs known as scarps.
Mercury is located 36 million miles ( 58 million kilometers) from the sun.

Mercury is a nicknamed the “Dead planet” because no living thing exist there.

4. Venus
Venus is the second brightest natural object in the sky. One day on Venus is longer than one year on Venus. Venus is sometimes called Earth's sister.

5. Earth
It is the only planet that has an atmosphere containing 21% (percent) oxygen. It is the only planet that has liquid water on its surface. Earth is the only planet in the solar system that people living on it.

6. Mars
The planet Mars is named for the Roman god of war. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is around 227,940,000 km from the Sun. Only 16 of the 39 Mars missions have been finished.

7. The Asteroid Belt
The asteroid belt was first found in The asteroid belt is a disc shape. The average distance between the object is a massive 600,000 miles.

8. Jupiter
Jupiter is made primarily of gases and is therefore known as a “gas giant”. The planet Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is two and a half times more massive than all the other planets in the solar system combined. In 1610 Jupiter was formed. It was named after Zeus the god of thunder.

9. Saturn
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun. Saturn is the sixth planet in the Solar system and, when look through a telescope, by far the most beautiful . The rings were first seen by Galileo in 1610 through a telescope. That was 407 years ago.

10. Uranus
Uranus turns on its axis once every 17 hours, 14 minutes and that is less than a day. Uranus makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years. It make 2 two trips around the sun every 164 Earth year. Uranus is often referred to as an “ice giant” planet.

11. Neptune
Neptune cannot be seen without a large telescope. Neptune was first seen in 1846 from the observatory in Berlin. Neptune has a diameter of 29,297 miles, ( 47,150) kilometers.

12. Dwarf plant Pluto
Pluto was first seen by use of a telescope in These bodies are unlike the other planets in the Solar System. The first eight planets orbit the Sun in a path which they have cleared of other objects. Pluto was the Roman God of the Underworld.

13. Moons
There are many moons in the solar system.
These are the names of some of the moons: our Moon, Io, Phobus, Deimos, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.
Our moon is the fifth largest moon in the Solar System.
