1 Cornell Notes AP World History

2 Step 1: Title your notes (Chapter # and name)
Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS

3 Step 3: Write your notes on the right-hand side of the paper (skip lines!)
Notes Title: Chapter 1 Abbreviate notes as much as possible (think text-like language) Skip lines between concepts to add information during class lectures For visual learners: illustrate your notes! HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

4 Step 2: Create a small column on the left-hand side of the paper
This will be for: HEADINGS – which you will add AFTER you complete your notes QUESTIONS – which you will add AFTER you complete your notes Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

5 Step 4: Create questions based on your notes, write them on the left-hand column in between headings
Create different level questions throughout your notes Level 1: Readers can point to one correct answer right in the text. (i.e. When did Columbus land in the New World?) Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

6 Step 4: Create questions based on your notes, write them on the left-hand column in between headings
Create different level questions throughout your notes Level 2: Readers infer answers from what the text implicitly states, finding answers in several places in the text. (i.e. Compare and contrast Columbus’ voyages with those of Marco Polo?) Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

7 Step 4: Create questions based on your notes, write them on the left-hand column in between headings
Create different level questions throughout your notes Level 3: Readers think beyond what text states. Answers are based on reader’s prior knowledge/ experience and will vary. (i.e. Was Columbus’ “discovery” of the New World ultimately positive or negative for humankind?) Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

8 Step 5: Summarize your notes
After reviewing your notes, write a summary of the main ideas in the bottom section. Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES

9 Step 6: STUDY your notes Re-read your notes in the right column.
Spend time studying ideas in the left column and the summary. Fold or cover right side of notes and quiz yourself using your own created questions Notes Title: Chapter 1 HEADINGSAND QUESTIONS SUMMARY OF NOTES
