3 What is on your mind? Using the post-its on your table, write down the key behaviour issues that you encounter and want to learn more about (one per note) Put them on the flip chart We will try to address these throughout the session Reminder about confidentiality here, don’t use names, and talk about the behaviour not the child Onto post its and we will gather them and put up the front to address throughout the day

12 Key Things To Do Convey the feeling that you like the child
Make sure that the work is at the right level of challenge for the child Have clear rules and routines Stay calm and use open body language Intervene in as low a key as you can Always give the child a way out Work with parents in joint home/school approaches Wondering out loud Rainbow technique – interrupt the cycle

15 The Trigger Stage Strategies to avoid the escalation stage:
Get in quick and be positive Divert a child onto something else Tell them what you want, not what you do not want Avoid trigger situations ~ be smart Give time for the child to comply

16 The Escalation Stage Strategies to avoid the crisis stage:
A child is preparing for “fight or flight” ~ help them make a good choice Watch for signs e.g. tension, breathing, facial expression ~ remove them or others from the situation Stay calm and do not provoke them

17 The Crisis Stage Make things safe (remove dangerous objects and get others to leave) Use restraint only if a child is a danger to themselves or others Stay in control and do not make it worse (by imitation, ridicule etc.) Get help ~ do not be proud, be smart

18 The Plateau/Recovery Stage
Strategies for working through the recovery phase: Do not ask provocative questions Allow time for recovery (theirs and yours) Guide the child towards something you would like them to do Consider “time out” tactic e.g. exit cards

19 The Post-Crisis/Depression Stage
Getting beyond the depression stage: Do not load the child up with more guilt If there was anything positive to praise then go for it! E.g. well done for avoiding hitting Discus how to change the behaviour in the future, in a positive, caring way e.g. if you feel that angry again, use your exit card
