1 List all the different machines you use in a day.
Do Now List all the different machines you use in a day.

2 R A C E Now, take 3 minutes to look through your text (pages ) and create another list of machines and innovations that came about during this time – 1830ish.

3 Chapter 14, Section 1 Industry in the North

4 Growth in Northern Manufacturing
Growth in Northern Manufacturing Farming Transportation Industry iron plow with replaceable parts steel plow mechanical reapers mechanical drill threshing machine horse drawn hay rack steam powered locomotive clipper ships steam powered machines telegraph

5 Threshing Machine for the separation of grain from stalks and husks.
Steel Hand Plow most important agricultural implement since the beginning of history, used to turn and break up soil, to bury crop residues, and to help control weeds. Mechanical reaper plucking ears of corn, cutting grain stalks, cutting grass for hay Threshing Machine for the separation of grain from stalks and husks. Horse Drawn Hay Rack could raise more grain with fewer hands Industrial Sounds Clips:

6 Steam Powered Locomotive
Clipper Ships Steam Powered Machine Telegraph

7 How did these discoveries affect people’s lives?
Farm Equipment - Telegraph -    Railroads/ Clipper Ships – Steam Power and New Machines– More crops produced by less workers, farmers moved west or went to work in factories companies developed, news could travel in minutes, merchants and farmers had access to information on supplies and prices made transportation easier and quicker, early American railroads were often unsafe (set off sparks), clipper ships increased sea trade with the world, made canal use less necessary factories could be built anywhere, produce more goods at lower costs, people bought more factory-made products, New England farmers became obsolete and they started getting new jobs

8 Key Questions: Which of the following is true about the early railroads? A. They initially moved slower than canal transportation B. They threw off dangerous sparks C. They were safe and reliable D. They were built with separate tracks for each direction B

9 By the 1850’s, which of the following linked many towns with cities and factories and opened new markets for the northern economy? A. Wagons B. Telephones C. Cruise Ships D. Railroads D Which is one way steam-powered machinery changed manufacturing? A. Factories needed more workers B. Machines were more expensive to run C. Factories could be built almost anywhere D. Machines produced more goods at a higher cost C

10 C D Clipper ships helped the United States
A. Compete with iron steamships B. In warfare C. Gain a large share of the world’s sea trade D. Develop industry in the south C Who would have said that railroad competition would cause them to lose money? A. Western farmers B. Factory owners C. Telegraph investors D. Canal Investors D

11 Which of the following is TRUE about the changes in farming caused by the new inventions in the 1800’s? A. Mechanical reapers did the job of five workers using hand tools B. Plows were still being pulled by slow moving oxen C. Bulldozers were used to clear the fields D. Farmers had to higher more workers A

12 Today’s Activity Each row will work together to choose what they feel is the most revolutionary invention out of what we’ve discussed. Role play different points of view to defend your choices. Each row should agree upon the invention and each student per row should contribute one reason for their choice. We will come together to share our ideas.
