Paying attention to self and others , meaninful dialogue and discussion are facilitated when each group members is conscious and is aware of what he/she is saying and howw he/she is saying it.

9 Before the Session Purpose of Interpretation is COMMUNICATION
Request the materials ahead of time, whenever possible Meet with the speaker to create a “game plan” for the meeting, and ask about any contentious or heated issues that may come up Create a glossary from the materials (and share with co-workers, if applicable) Ask the speaker to avoid colloquialisms and puns-in-word, proverbs, idioms, jargon, and slang which don’t necessarily translate

Ask speaker to use short, concise sentences, and allow the interpreter to render the message Ask speaker to speak clearly and avoid trailing off at the end of sentences Ask the meeting chair to have only one person speak at a time If you think the interpreter made a mistake, instead of challenging them, rephrase the question (the interpreter will render exactly what the other party has said)

Ask speaker to speak in the first person, and address the parents as if they understand English Be aware of audience’s body language, and perform frequent checks for understanding (a nod doesn’t always mean they understand) Ask for enough time to translate materials (agenda, etc.), if requested Tell the speaker that you’ll be interpreting everything they say, including side comments, if the audience would have heard them
