9 Homework Why do teachers assign homework?
Review and practice what they’ve covered in class. Explore subjects more fully than classroom time permits. Learn to use resources such as libraries, reference materials, and computer Web sites to find information about a subject. Integrate learning by applying many different skills into a single task, such as a book report or science project. It teaches student to work independently. It encourages self-discipline and responsibility.

10 Homework (continued) Students copy homework onto white lined paper in their green folder each afternoon from the board. It will also be listed on my website nightly at Students will receive homework Monday through Thursday every week. Parents please look over and sign homework when complete and return the next day. Homework will be randomly counted as a grade. If an emergency comes up and homework is not completed, please let me know. Sports and extra-curricular activities are not emergencies. Homework not returned the next day will result in an automatic loss of recess. Let’s take a minute to look at some typical homework your child will be getting in second grade.

11 Reader Accelerated http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx
My goal is to encourage my students to become avid readers. After each book read, he/she will take a short 10 question Accelerated Reader comprehension computer quiz about the book. If score is 70% or above student will earn a sticker for their “Amazing A.R. Achiever” card chart. When student successfully fills chart he/she earns a free book. Students should read AT LEAST 10 books per month. The student that reads the most A.R. books per quarter with a score of 70% or above can choose a free book from the book order on me!

12 STAR AND SUCCESS MAKER We will continue using the STAR program for benchmark testing and progress monitoring for all students. The results show us where your child is performing compared to his/her same grade peers nationally and will help us place them in like groups for intervention or enrichment. Students will use the Success Maker program twice a week, to practice both math and reading skills.

13 Student Reminders Be eager to participate
Have homework completed and signed by a parent. Always have necessary materials. Give it your best. Make positive decisions. Let’s go over our behavior plan. Study a little at a time, but often. The average human brain requires new information to be seen 13 times before that information is transferred into long-term memory. Use my website:

14 Grading Tests, quizzes, reports, projects, and homework will be weighted and averaged for your student’s overall grade. All graded assignments are written on the HOMEWORK sheet daily by your child. Please check his/her folder for homework each day. Check Powerschool. e=833343

15 Extra reminders to help make the year a good one
Label ALL your child’s belongings. Many children have the same items your child has. This will ensure items are returned if misplaced. Now that we’re back to school, good habits for sleeping, eating and completing homework are essential to a successful school year. Please contact me with any questions or concerns: Homework will also be posted on my website:

16 Parent Reminders Parents and the environment they create at home are crucial factors…equally as important as the school…in determining children’s overall achievement. Your attitude concerning education will dictate how your child will approach learning. A parent who participates in their child’s educational process communicates a message to their child that education is important. A child who receives such a message has motivation to succeed. Teachers cannot do it themselves. The demand of a classroom of students prevents the teacher from providing the kind of individual attention to stimulate each child to their fullest ability. Parent involvement is a must if the maximum benefits of education experiences are to be realized. Praise and encouragement is recognized by educators as one of the most effective tools of teaching. Check student’s work nightly and sign homework each night.

17 Parent Reminders Continued
Maintain a designated quiet homework time and space for your child. Help with homework and studying while still encouraging independence. Your parental support affects your child’s performance greatly. Have your child read before bed. Sometimes read with or to them, they are never too old to be read to. In addition, the left to right repetitive eye movement is a natural sleep inducer! Keep your child home when he/she is REALLY sick…BUT not in excess. There is a direct correlation between excessive absences and low achievement. After 9 absences you will need a doctor’s excuse each time your child is out thereafter. AM drop off time is no earlier than 8:10; PM pick up, parents may enter the building no earlier than 3 o’clock. Parents will not longer be able to be buzzed in before 3PM. Access Powerschool to view your student’s grades. Progress reports will be sent home halfway through each marking period. Access to verify your child’s homework assignments.

18 Just Checking… Can your child tie his/her shoes? Does your child know
your phone number? Does your child know his/her own address? Just Checking… In recent years our second graders have not been too solid on these particular personal care and emergency information areas. If your child is not proficient with these, please practice at home.

19 In our class we WORK HARD…

20 Thank you for attending Meet the Teacher Night, Mrs. Kira Stahler
