1 The student is expected to: 11C summarize the role of microorganisms in both maintaining and disrupting the health of both organisms and ecosystems and 12C analyze the flow of matter and energy through trophic levels using various models, including food chains, food webs, and ecological pyramids

2 Warm-Up (9/1) Choose the best answer, and explain in a complete sentence why it is correct. Name/Nombre Date/Fecha Period ___ Which of the following levels of organization includes all other levels? Ecosystem Community Organelle Organism

3 Make these thinking maps on the back of PAGE 2 (behind your levels of organization notes)
Use all 12 levels Use only: biomes, organisms, ecosystems, communities, and populations

4 KEY CONCEPT -Life requires energy.
-Organisms get energy from either food, sunlight, or chemicals.

5 Producers provide energy for other organisms in an ecosystem.
Producers = “autotrophs” Producers get their energy from non-living resources.

6 Energy The main source of energy is sunlight.
BUT…not everything can use this energy directly.

7 Producers provide energy for other organisms in an ecosystem.
Consumers = “heterotrophs” Consumers eat other living or once-living resources.

8 Types of Heterotrophs Herbivores – eat only plants
Example: Cows, caterpillars, deer Carnivores – eat only animals Example: snakes, dogs, owls

9 Types of Heterotrophs Omnivores – eat plants and animals
Example: Humans, bears, cows Detritivores – eat plant and animal remains and dead matter Example: Worms, snails, mites

10 Types of Heterotrophs Decomposers – break down organic matter
Example: Bacteria, fungus

11 Feeding Relationships
Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction Sun  autotrophs (producers)  heterotrophs (consumers) Energy Flow can be represented in one of three ways: 1. Food Chain 2. Food Web 3. Energy Pyramid

12 Almost all producers obtain energy from sunlight.
Photosynthesis makes energy from sunlight. Chemosynthesis makes energy from chemicals. But most producers use photosynthesis! carbon dioxide + water + hydrogen sulfide + oxygen sugar + sulfuric acid

13 Closure Answer the following question in a complete sentence:
Name/Nombre Date/Fecha Period ___ Explain the difference between a food chain and a food web. The difference between a food chain and a food web is…

14 Closure Answer the following question in a complete sentence:
Name/Nombre Date/Fecha Period ___ Explain the difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph. The difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph is…
