Black people=slaves, not considered as human beings Slavery= illegal in 1808, but continued on a large scale 1790= ~ slaves in US 1830= ~ 2 M On the eve of Civil War ( )= ~ 4 M After Civil War= slavery abolished but black & white not egal Beloved Toni Morrison extract= 20th century novel, denouncing slavery in the 19th century. (after supposed abolishment) Extract : Baby Sugg's POV, telling story of her family Use of trade vocabulary associated to human & family vocabulary=> slaves aren't human, just objects. Short sentences= banalisation of dramatical situation

VIOLENCE GOES ON After Civil War + Abolishment → violent reactions,
segregation → lynching Black people were lynched then suspended in trees as trophees / warnings (south of USA) « Strange Fruit » song originally poem written by Abel Meeropol, sung by Bille Holiday (first time = 1939) Lexical field of violence, of the Church, of the south (for USA) Methapora of the « strange fruit » , which is the person suspended, dehumanization → this term has now become synonym of lynching Considered as one of the first commited act of the civil rights movement

: African-American Civil Rights Movement → social movement that defends black ppl rights Rosa Parks, 55, sat on the front backwards (bus) / had to sit in the back → arrested 61 : Freedom Rides , Black + White to defend blacks rights/ students, took a ride in a bus and sat where they pleased across country → encountered violence / never gave up « I have a dream » speech, Luther King, , pacifist speech → « brotherhood », repeats « together » three times Anaphora → gives an impression of hope Quotes lots of states → shout out at everybody First american patriotic song, replaced at this time

IN OUR DAYS Racism anti-black : still present even though Black US president → still inequalities concerning living conditions sometimes.
