1 Cristian Gomez Head, Validation Group, Space Services Division, ITU-R
ITU-T Workshop on Bridging the Standardization Gap and Interactive Training Session (Nadi, Fiji, 4 – 6 July 2011 ) Spectrum planning at national level and adoption of the table of allocations for implementation of technical standards Cristian Gomez Head, Validation Group, Space Services Division, ITU-R Session 5: (Implementation of standards (broadband technologies) Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

2 Spectrum planning at national level and adoption of the table of allocations for implementation of technical standards This session will review the importance of the international table of frequency allocation as an element of national economic development and the impact of  its implementation in enabling the adoption of radio technology standards. Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

3 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
Harmonization of frequency allocations for radio services. Implements world-wide allocations as well as regional. Some bands allocated to multiple radio services (shared) Specific country allocations possible by footnote. Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

4 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
Changing needs & technology evolution Review & modifications to the international table of allocations World and regional adoption Consideration of national needs for implementation Incidence in standards adoption Participation in each one of these processes is subject to the level of development of the country Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

5 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
COMPATIBILLITY INTERCONECTION INTEROPERABILITY Effective ICTs Participation in each one of these processes is subject to the level of development of the country Spectrum planning & standardization Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

6 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
Example: Spectrum for Short Range Devices Multiple bands available world-wide, depending on application and range needed. One principal application is stock tracking. Harmonized bands needed to support all countries in the supply chain. Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

7 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
Example: UHF land mobile equipment Multiple land mobile bands available world-wide in the UHF spectrum Several standards available for land mobile: analogue, digital: TETRA, APCO, ETSI and proprietary Need for national spectrum planning to ensure: - economies of scale - coexistence (avoid harmful interference) Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011

8 Principal features of the international table of frequency allocations
Spectrum standardization System specifications/ standards Review of national legislation and policies Nadi, Fiji, 4-6 July 2011
