6 Panama Canal The United States negotiated with France to buy land in Panama to build a Canal so the navy could quickly move from the Atlantic to the Pacific. However, Columbia refused the sale. An agreement was made with the US government that if the US would help Panama gain their independence, they would allow the canal to be built. In 1903, Panama became its own country, and construction on the canal began.

7 Panama Canal Casualties among the workers were high due to yellow fever and malaria The canal was completed in ten years, three years ahead of schedule. However, the cost was a phenomenal $350 million, the most expensive operation the US government had ever undertaken. In addition, Panama was paid ten million dollars, plus another quarter million each year, for use of the territory. The use of the canal increased trade and forced nations to view the US as a legitimate world power.

12 Document A: The Open Door Notes
Earnestly desirous to remove any cause of irritation and to insure at the same time to the commerce of all nations in China... [the United States urges all nations claiming a sphere of influence in China to declare] that [all nations] shall enjoy perfect equality of treatment for their commerce and navigation within such spheres.... We adhere to the policy... of peace with the Chinese nation, of furtherance of lawful commerce, and of protection of lives and property of our citizens by all means.... The policy of the Government of the United States is to seek a solution which may bring about permanent safety and peace to China, preserve Chinese territorial and administrative entity, protect all rights guaranteed to friendly powers by treaty and international law, and safeguard for the world the principle of equal and impartial trade with all parts of the Chinese Empire. -John Hay, U.S. Secretary of State, 1899

14 Open Door Policy - China
The U.S. felt their economic opportunities in China may be limited because of the Europeans spheres of influence in China. A sphere of influence is a region, in which a country had exclusive trade, mining, and other economic rights. The United States tried to establish an Open Door Policy in China. This would allow for the U.S. to have fair access to the Chinese Market. Europeans did not want this to happen – they would lose money and control.

15 Closing Question: How did the U.S.’s role in Asia and the Pacific expand in the early 1900’s?
