5 A citizen of Rome talking about his life.
Source C I fight to entertain the crowds every night. I have faced other slaves, traitors, lions and other vicious animals. I won my battle tonight, but the show was not very entertaining, I wonder what will happen? A Roman gladiator in 150 BC Source A I get to use all of my power in The Senate, I am very powerful and can influence most of the laws that are made in Rome. A Roman senator Source B I was captured by the Roman army when they took over my country. I work in the heat against my will. If I do not complete the work I am beaten and spat on. A Roman slave in 48 AD Source D Life for the Auxilia was better than most people who lived in the Empire. They were not citizens but had full training, fantastic medical care and the respect of the citizens they protected. A modern historian writing about an Auxilla soldier. 2009 15 Source E I have a clean life, I am healthy and I eat well. I can entertain myself at the bath house or the amphitheatre. The army are very strong in the area that I live and people can get a job there easily. A citizen of Rome talking about his life.

6 Source Who produced the source What does the source tell us about Roman life Why have they said this?

7 Was the Roman Empire a nice place to live?
From source A I can learn that a Roman senator would like to live in the Roman Empire. I know this because he says ‘ I can influence most of the laws’. This person would/would not like to live in the Roman Empire because he can change the things he does not like and live a life that is easy. There is little chance of anyone taking his power away so he can do it for a long time. (Show why he likes living in Rome, you would also mention why he might not like living in Rome). Model point How to write your point! From source B I can learn that a __________would like to live in the Roman Empire. I know this because he says ….. This person would/would not like to live in the Roman Empire because….. 15 Overall, I think the Roman Empire was a nice/not very nice place to live. I think this because… (Try to give 2/3 reasons). How to write a simple conclusion.

8 Extension Imagine you are three of the people from the sources – write a diary entry with something they might have enjoyed/disliked and illustrate the key points. E.g. My name is Claudius the Gladiator. Today I had to fight against two lions! Luckily I was well armed and managed to fight them off! My friend Brutus was not so lucky 

9 Self assessment I think my answer is a Level ____
I think this because : To improve I could : 10
