2 Objective/Warm-up The students will describe a soldier’s life in WWI by analyzing a primary source The students will describe the Russian Revolution by reading a primary source document. Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session on Wednesday in Mr. Gregg’s Room. More information will follow Test on Friday, February 18, 2011 Warm-up: Identify the causes of World War I and the members of the Central Powers and the Allies.

From Czars to Communists Bolsheviks started as a small faction from the Russian Social Democrats Bolsheviks led by V.I. Lenin who endorsed violence to destroy capitalism Lenin and the Bolsheviks Lenin away from Russian between 1900 to 1917 Brought to Russia in April 1917 by Germans to create disorder in Russia “Peace, Land, Bread” “Worker Control of Production” All Power to the Soviets” Question: How do these slogans reflect the changing paradigm in Russia?

5 The Bolsheviks Seize Power
October 1917 membership in the Moscow and Petrograd soviets growing Leon Trotsky-head of Petrograd soviet November 6, 1917 Bolsheviks seized Winter Palace, seat of the provisional government Bolsheviks renamed themselves to Communists Russia signs Brest-Litovsk on March 3, 1918 They gave up eastern Poland, Ukraine, Finland, and Baltic provinces Question: Why did Lenin sign this treaty and how did the Russian people respond to this treaty?

6 Civil War in Russia Many opposed to the new Bolshevik (Communist) government for these reasons: 1. Groups loyal to the Czar 2. Liberal and anti-Leninist socialists a. liberals wanted a constitutional monarchy b. socialist wanted gradual reform Allies sent 1,000’s of troops to bring Russia back into the war Siberia attacked the Communists with the White army Ukrainians and Baltic forces By 1920 the White forces had been defeated Ukraine retaken, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan in 1921

8 Exit Ticket 1. Explain why governments often use propaganda during wartime 2. Describe the trenches that both the Western Front and Eastern Front used in World War I 3. Develop a sequence of events leading to the March Revolution in Russia.

9 Homework Read Section 4, pages and be prepared for a 5 Question Quiz over the reading.
