Bridging Text and Context
Saki (Hector Hugh Munro) described in his literary pieces the representatives of upper- class English society at the end of the 19th century. In those times, rich people who didn’t feel well went to the country, hoping that the fresh air and the quiet and peaceful atmosphere would do them good. Their relatives and friends often helped them to make new friends in the country. The sent “letters of introduction” to families they knew there and asked them to invite the visitors for tea. It was quite unusual to invite and pay a visit to total strangers. Saki made fun of those formal boring social calls (ביקורים חברתיים) which neither the hosts מארחים)) nor the visitors enjoyed. How can this information help you understand the story?
36
The following information helps me understand the idea of the plot better.
Saki uses Framton as an example of a rich aristocrat who, because of his mental disorder, goes to the country. There he visits Vera and her aunt’s family house. He is not familiar with anybody there but his sister supplied him with a letter of introduction which is typical for that time. Saki made fun on this situation in the society. He did that with help of Vera who made tricks on both Framton and her own family.
