1 Metztli: An International Space Station Approach to Lunar Exploration
International Space University Summer Session Program 2003 2003 / 7/5 - 9/6 Strasbourg, France International Lunar Organization: Connecting Lunar Explorers

2 ISU International Space University (SSP, MSS)
Founded in 1988 by 3 young visionaries International Interdisciplinary Intercultural (Intergenerational) Teamwork “Think out of the box”

3 46 team members from 20 countries

4 Team Project Moon Mission
To create an international approach to peaceful lunar development which encourages a permanent lunar presence and furthers space exploration. Scope To examine ways in which the International Space Station assets and organization can be utilized to support a program of lunar development and exploration.

5 Why use ISS? Established international partnership
trust developed among the partner nations management skills and organizational structures based on many lessons and experiences gained Political incentives for using the established ISS assets Reaching the Public International nature Long-term human presence Visibility in the sky

6 Outline A Framework for Lunar Exploration & Development
Using the ISS for an International Lunar Framework Hitchhiking to the Moon Operational Assessments of the New ISS-Lunar Missions ISS-Lunar Program Management

7 Conclusions Lunar activities should capitalize on the ISS assets, infrastructure, and organizational structure. The ISS should be considered as a lunar transportation system. An ISS lunar cycler concept should be assessed through a technology demonstrator. Once technical and operational issues are addressed, the ISS human transportation vehicle should be considered. An international agreement on a lunar regulatory framework should be established. International organizations should be established for lunar activities scientifically, technologically, legally.

8 Framework Framework for lunar exploration and development

9 ISS to the Moon? Earth Moon Cycler Orbit or Lunar Orbit
Create long-term human presence beyond LEO; cislunar environment exposure; better accessibility to the Moon Crew of 4 6 modules (150 tons)

10 ILO International Lunar Organization: Connecting Lunar Explorers
James D. Burke, Ayodele A. Faiyetole, Florian Mayrhofer, Francisco Müller Sánchez, Yuki D. Takahashi - a forum for communication among lunar explorers -

11 ISS Lunar Working Group
To coordinate the ISS uses specifically for a lunar program. International Microgravity Strategic Planning Group International Space Life Science Working Group Inform the global community about the ISS as a stepping stone to the Moon. Organize international student research participation program for research on the ISS related to the Moon. Expand the participation to a global level by seeking members from even non-ISS states.
