2 Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic 4e, AP* Ed. ©2012
Hello, I’m ______, and I’m pleased to introduce Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic 4th edition for advanced placement Calculus AB and BC, by Ross Finney, Frank Demana, Bert Waits, Dan Kennedy. As students learn the math and prepare for the AP calculus exam, there is one definite resource they can rely on that has proven to be an effective study aid. Finney, Demana, Waits, Kennedy

3 Authorship Nationally-recognized author team
Years of experience teaching precalculus and calculus Pioneered the use of graphing calculators in the classroom Demana & Waits are the co-founders of national Teachers Teaching with Technology (T3) professional development program First, just a quick word about our authors. Frank Demana is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at The Ohio State University. As a supporter of the use of technology to teach and learn mathematics, he and author Bert Waits founded the national Teachers Teaching with Technology (T “cubed”) professional development program. Dr. Waits has published articles in more than 50 nationally recognized professional journals. Dr. Finney worked as a consultant for the Educational Development Center in Newton, Massachusetts. He directed the Undergraduate Mathematics and its Applications Project (or UMAP) from 1977 to 1984 and was founding editor of the UMAP Journal. Dan Kennedy joined the Advanced Placement Calculus Test Development Committee in 1986, then in 1990 became the first high school teacher in 35 years to chair that committee. It was during his tenure as chair that the program moved to require graphing calculators and laid the early groundwork for the 1998 reform of the Advanced Placement Calculus curriculum.

4 Table of Contents Chapter 1 Prerequisites for Calculus
Chapter 2 Limits and Continuity Chapter 3 Derivatives Chapter 4 More Derivatives Chapter 5 Applications of Derivatives Chapter 6 The Definite Integral Chapter 7 Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling Chapter 8 Applications of Definite Integrals Chapter 9 Sequences, L’Hôpital’s Rule, and Improper Integrals Chapter 10 Infinite Series Chapter 11 Parametric, Vector, and Polar Functions At the urging of many teachers who have used previous editions of our textbook, for the 4th edition, the long chapter on techniques of differentiation has been split into two chapters. Both Chapters 3 and 4 focus on these topics. [click] As a result of the chapter split, 86 brand-new Chapter Review exercises have been added to the textbook, along with an extra Quick Quiz for AP* Preparation. [click] The authors also continue to expand the practice with slope fields

5 For AP* Calculus AB & BC Nationally recognized author team with expertise on the AP* Calculus Exam Written specifically for high school students and adheres to guidelines for AP* Calculus AB & BC AP* Test Prep workbook written specifically for use with this text Includes complete topic correlation to both AB and BC Exams Chapters 1-7 prepare students for the AB exam The entire text prepares students for the BC exam Intended for students taking an Advanced Placement Calculus course, the text is divided into 11 chapters with many subtopics designed for a full-year course of study. Calculus Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic encompasses problems and exercises of real life situations modeled after problems that have appeared on the AP exam.

6 The only calculus text written specifically for high school students
The Best AP Calculus Program is Now Better Split chapter on Derivatives into 2 chapters Added guidance on the use of graphing calculators Expanded treatment of Slope Fields Quick Quiz at the end of each chapter for AP Test Preparation Answers to ALL exercises in the back of the TE

7 Using Graphing Calculators
In the 4th edition, the authors have provided detailed guidance in every chapter on appropriate use of graphing calculators, versus when students should solve problems without them. In the Exercise Sets, you’ll see gray circles around certain exercise numbers – these are problems the authors suggest students should solve without a calculator so they will truly understand the graphical and algebraic connections.

8 Balanced Approach Numerically Algebraically

9 Balanced Approach Graphically Analytically

10 Explorations Definite Integrals Functions
Explorations appear throughout the text and provide students with the perfect opportunity to become an active learner and discover mathematics on their own. Honing \ critical thinking and problem-solving skills will ultimately lead to success on the AP* Exams. For example students are asked to explore many topics before tackling theoretical proof. Local linearity, stressed throughout the text, permits the early introduction of l’Hôpital’s Rule. (click) When the definite integral is introduced, students are first asked to find total change given over a specific period of time given a rate of change before they consider geometric applications. (click) Functions are defined graphically, with tables, and with words as well as algebraically throughout the text.

11 Exercises As seen with the Explorations, Calculus GNA places a huge emphasis on practice and that is seen through the variety of practice exercises offered to students in each chapter. [click] At the end of each section, there is a set of Exercises, as well as a Quick Review, which helps students review skills before the Exercise Set. Again, the authors are reminding students that in order to succeed on the AP Exam, you must understand the material, not just memorize it. Standardized Test Questions are found in each section of a chapter as well. These are true/false or multiple choice questions written to mimic those on the AP Exams.

12 Cumulative Quick Quizzes
Focus on conceptual understanding for the AP* Exam Preparation for the AP Exams is embedded on each page throughout this book. In particular the cumulative Quick Quizzes are provided two or three times in each chapter so students and teachers can continuously monitor how well material is grasped and where to focus support for improvement. [click] In addition, at the end of each Chapter Review Exercise set, there is an AP* Examination Preparation box that includes 3 free response questions written in AP Exam-like format. More of these practice questions are found in the AP Test Prep Workbook.

13 Student Support AP* Test Prep workbook
for Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic 4th Edition Introduction to the AP AB and BC Calculus Exams Review of all AP Topics 4 Full Practice Exams Answers and Solutions Test-taking Strategies The AP Test Prep workbook is written in conjunction with Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic 4thEd. Using a workbook written to work specifically with their textbook will more easily allow students to translate what they learned in class and what they read in their textbook to what will be needed for the AP exam. The AP Test Prep workbook for Calculus 4th Edition includes review for the AB and BC exams, and 4 full practice exams with answers and solutions. There’s no better way to have your students prepare for the AP* calculus exam.
