The report is the single biggest factor in getting us in front of thought leaders in the state of Florida in the last 6 months since it’s release.” – Randy Hanna, Chancellor of the Florida College System

30 Communication and Outreach Review and Development
EMSI Approach Strategic Planning Communication and Outreach Review and Development Walla Walla video…. EMSI is passionate about two things: community colleges and data. The first way we do that is by supporting strategic planning initiatives with critical data needed to establish an objective approach and to give the institution perspective on what makes sense based on the economic realities of the community.

31 See how college relates to outcomes
Over the past 13 yrs we’ve seen that when colleges use good labor market data to refine and solidify connections between academic programs and great local jobs, in strong regional industries, that the result has been the exponential growth of their IMPACT. And when colleges help students look through academic programs into the job market – they can move the needle on student success – and this in turn strengthens the college’s regional economic impact.

32 Strategic Planning – Why EMSI data?
To do this we pull together a large amount of labor market data, which is inclusive of real-time LMI or job postings, industries, occupations, business names, skills, and instructional programs. 9 of your community colleges are already using Analyst, as well as others in the state such as Frederick County Workforce Services, Montgomery County Dept of Economic Development, Tri-county council for Sothern Maryland and others.

33 Strategic Planning Ok, so we then create associations between all these datasets so that college leaders can understand the environment for their institution's programs. Government data is wild and undomesticated and shot through with holes. It’s great for what it’s meant for but to turn it into decision ready data we have to process it… 35% of county level labor market data is suppressed….Also 17% of the labor market, the self-employed, are generally excluded and often LMI is up to 2yrs out of date and often non-regional. We taken about 90 sources, mathematically unsupressed and integrated them, and then we update them 4 times a year. The result is a comprehensive, local and current data set that is then used to better inform the development of programs so that they are relevant and flexible to the needs of local business and the market as a whole.

34 Analyst – Complete Labor Market Analysis for Strategic Planning
Subscription Training and support 200+ Colleges Industry, Occ, Program analysis We pulled this data from Analyst last week. It took all of 10 minutes. In addition to this online service, our professional services team also does Gap Analysis studies for colleges as well.

35 In addition to an industry perspective, here is a look at some of the top occupation in terms of growth. In light of how much it costs to add a new program…this can be helpful info in the decision making process. Or when cutting a program, good data can help with the navigation of faculty politics It can also greatly help with chasing large $$ grants as well. Or just to provide context when meeting with leaders in the community

36 Montgomery College 2020 Far more robust analysis Targeted Demographics
County & Regional Occupational Projections Programmatic trends and skills gaps Accessible and updated data along with special reports Kevin Long - Senior Planning and Policy Analyst Kevin Long at Montgomery spoke at our user’s conference last year and this is one of the slides he used to talk about some of the ways they use Analyst.

37 Communication and Outreach Review and Development
EMSI Approach Strategic Planning Communication and Outreach Review and Development The next focus area for improving labor market outcomes is how community colleges engage students and the local community using data.

38 Communication and Outreach
Q: How does your college communicate the connection between your programs and exciting local careers? This has been the biggest area of growth for our company since 2007/2008, when the economy took a nose dive. At that time, a lot of workers found themselves out of a job. In addition, as the job market dried up, a lot students (and their parents) started to ask about what programs and jobs they should focus on. Many looked (and continue to look) to the colleges for help in sorting out their career options. In fact, a good deal of enrollment decisions are being based on how well students and parents perceive the college and it’s ability to provide the sort of education they can use to build a better career for themselves. To evaluate the need in this area, we typically ask, “Are you satisfied with how your college website communicates with connection between your programs and the exciting careers that you train for?

39 The college website is often filled with lots and lots of stuff, none of which creates the essential Education to Career connection that many students are looking for.

40 To help, we take the same data that you can find in Analyst and tailor it to the perspective of the student so they can clearly see how your programs relate to the local labor market. We also make it so you can prominently feature this on the college website.

41 4 colleges in Maryland are currently using CC – Prince George’s, Montgomery, Anne Arundel and Carroll.

“The implementation process and the results so far are equally transformational in helping our students, our community, our faculty, and our advisors fully understand viable career pathways that map to our credit and non-credit programs, and even to our transfer partners." – Karen Stout, President, Montgomery Community College Thanks!
