1 MATH 102-008 Mathematical Literacy for College Students II
Class 9, February 23, 2016 Lesson 6.4: A Closer Look at Screening Tools

2 Lesson 6.4 Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should understand that: It is important to be careful when interpreting phrases about conditional probabilities. A two-way table is a useful tool to analyze conditional probabilities. False positive rates and false negative rates are not directly related to a test’s sensitivity or specificity.

3 Lesson 6.4 Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Correctly interpret phrases or statements referring to conditional probabilities. Calculate different types of conditional probabilities with information in a two-way table (contingency table). These conditional probabilities include: specificity, sensitivity, false positive rate, false negative rate. Create a two-way table to model the effectiveness of a screening tool.

4 Lesson 6.4 Connections Main ideas in the lesson:
Conditional probabilities, such as sensitivity, specificity, false positive rate, and false negative rate, should be taken into consideration when considering the effectiveness of a screening tool. A two-way table is a useful way to analyze conditional probabilities.

5 Lesson 6.4 Connections Connections to the 8 course goals:
4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision.
