AVID’s Mission AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What AVID is… AVID = Advancement Via Individual Determination
A direct support structure for students’ academic and career success. A structured, college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts. A schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor adopted by nearly 4,500 schools in 45 states and 15 countries. A professional development program providing training throughout the world. AVID strategies support the Common Core State Standards.

AVID Program Essentials
AVID student selection Voluntary participation AVID elective class offered during the school day Rigorous course and study Writing and reading curriculum Inquiry to promote critical reading Collaboration Trained tutors Data collection and analysis District and school commitment Active and interdisciplinary site team

AVID Requirements Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Student must participate in the AVID class essentials (core curriculum, AVID binders, tutorials, Cornell Notes, weekly calendars/agenda, and grade checks every three weeks).

Tutorials Tutorials are every Tuesday and Thursday. Students must fill out their Tutorial Request Form (TRF) BEFORE class!

Binder Checks Needed Binder Contents
• Good quality, 3-ring binder, 2″ or 3″ rings with pocket inserts • Five to six colored dividers with tabs to separate each academic class including AVID • Zipper pouch to store supplies (3-hole punched heavy duty zip-lock bags also work) • Two or more pens • Two or more sharpened pencils • Filler paper (some notebook paper is now available in Cornell note style) • Assignment calendar for each academic class • Tutorial logs • Learning logs • Cornell note paper • Erasers • Highlighters

Grade Checks Grade Checks occur every three weeks. Students will ask all their teachers, including PE, to complete the grade check. The students receive the form on Monday and must turn it in on Friday. This provides them ample opportunity to get grades for all their classes.

Service Hours Colleges would like to see well-rounded students. Community service is a way to exhibit this. CHS AVID requires students to complete 20 hours of community service every year. Community Service Opportunities: God’s Pantry: Saturdays at CHS Community 5k Runs Convalescent Home Tutoring Community Outreaches
