3 There are four main types of British Universities
1. Ancient Universities 2. Red Brick Universities 3. New Universities 4. Open University

4 1. Ancient Universities Ancient universities in Great Britain were founded during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. University of Oxford - founded before 1167 University of Cambridge - 1209 University of St Andrews - 1413 University of Glasgow - 1451 University of Aberdeen - 1495 University of Edinburgh - 1583 University of Dublin - 1592

5 Oxford and Cambridge universities are continuously found in first and second place of the British league tables. Together they are known as Oxbridge and share a century old rivalry, which dates back to when Cambridge was founded by dissident Oxford scholars.

6 2. Red Brick Universities
Red Brick Universities were usually built with red brick. They were founded in the industrial parts of the cities during the Victorian era ( ) and before the Second World War. 8 3. New Universities Two types of universities are subsumed under the term "New Universities". First of all the academic institutions founded in the 1960s after the Robins Report. Besides recommending immediate expansion of universities, the Report also suggested elevating Colleges of Advanced Technology to university status.

15 Teaching methods The OU uses a variety of methods for teaching, including written and audio materials, the Internet, disc-based software and television programmes on DVD. 

16 How will you study? With The Open University, you can study at home or at work, on the move or on the beach – reading, watching and listening, doing activities and assignments, taking part in debates and discussions.

17 You get regular support from your tutor on both a one-to-one basis and as part of group tutorials, which can be face to face or online. You’ll be able to get together with other students online, through informal study groups and have access to our Student Support Team when you need them.

18 I will do my best to enter the Open University
If I should have a chance, I will enter The Open University, because it is a whole new, incredibly supportive level of distance learning. I will be able to choose when and where to study: at the seashore, at home, in the library or in the hospital. There is a wonderful chance to be in contact with a personal tutor and other students.
