2 The Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883 with its soaring arches presenting a “golden door” of opportunity to all American immigrants. I. Cities Grew New York, like many other cities was experiencing a population explosion outward from the old downtown. Poor families crowd into the center while the rich ones move to the suburbs.

8 1865: Salvation Army began to help the poor with food & shelter
YMCA: helped children escape city slums Settlement House: community center that offers services to the poor Hull House: Jane Adams Dedicated too improving the living conditions of Chicago Slums By 1900: 100 centers opened in American cities
