1 SMACK THE WORD

2 First, let’s review the rules.
SMACK THE WORD On the whiteboard you will see a sentence with a missing adjective, either a comparative or a superlative. Read the sentence. Below there will be three choices of words to fill in the space. Smack the right word that goes in the space with your hand. You only get once chance to hit the word. If you’re right, your team gets one point. First, let’s review the rules.

3 big (bigger, the biggest)
REVIEW Every adjective has a comparative and superlative. big (bigger, the biggest) A comparative compares to things. (A) is _______ than (B). If you see the word “than” after the adjective you know it’s a comparative.

4 REVIEW To make an adjective into a comparative, you usually add “er”.
tall (taller), loud (louder), clean (cleaner ) If you don’t know, try adding “er”, most times you’ll be right. If the word is c-v-c (like big, hot), then you need to double the last letter before you add “er”. big (bigger), hot (hotter), fat (fatter), thin (thinner)

5 funny (funnier), tiny (tinier), icy (icier) good (better), bad (worse)
REVIEW Like plurals, if the adjective ends with “y”, change it to “i” before adding “er”. funny (funnier), tiny (tinier), icy (icier) There are some special ones like “good” and “bad” that are completely different. good (better), bad (worse)

6 (2) Is it more than 2 syllables (like im • por • tant)?
REVIEW Sometimes you cannot add “er”. Instead you put “more” before the adjective. There are many special adjectives, but there are a few rules to know when to use “more”. (1) Does it end in “-ed”, “-ing” or “-ful”? tired (more tired), boring (more boring), playful (more playful) (2) Is it more than 2 syllables (like im • por • tant)? important (more important), destructive (more destructive) If the answer isn’t “yes” to either, then just add “er”.

7 big (bigger, the biggest) (A) is the _______ (noun).
REVIEW Every adjective has a comparative and superlative. big (bigger, the biggest) A superlatives tells us which is #1. (A) is the _______ (noun). If you see the word “the” right before the adjective you know it’s a superlative.

8 tall (the tallest), loud (the loudest), clean (the cleanest)
REVIEW To make an adjective into a superlative put “the” before the adjective, and “-est” at the end of the adjective. Do not forget “THE”. tall (the tallest), loud (the loudest), clean (the cleanest) Many of the same rules apply for comparatives and superlatives. If you don’t know, try adding “-est”, most times you’ll be right.

9 REVIEW For c-v-c, double the last letter before you add “the” and “-est”. big (the biggest), hot (the hottest), fat (the fattest) For adjectives ending in “y”, change to “i” then add “the”, “-est”. funny (the funniest), tiny (the tiniest), icy (the iciest) “Good” and “bad” that are special. good (the best), bad (the worst)

10 (2) Is it more than 2 syllables (like im • por • tant)?
REVIEW The rules for NOT adding “the” and “-est” are the same as with comparatives. Instead you add “the most” before the adjective. Do not forget “THE”. (1) Does it end in “-ed”, “-ing” or “-ful”? tired (the most tired), boring (the most boring), playful (the most playful) (2) Is it more than 2 syllables (like im • por • tant)? important (the most important), destructive (the most destructive)

11 REVIEW Finally, there are some very irregular ones that cannot get “-er” or “-est”, but instead use “more” and “the most”. fun (more fun, the most fun) afraid (more afraid, the most afraid) Others don’t use either, and are special. good (better, the best) bad (worse, the worst) far (farther/further, the farthest/the furthest) little (less/smaller, the least/the smallest)

12 REVIEW So, for the game remember: For a comparative:
If it’s normal: add “-er” to the end of the adjective. If it ends with -ed, -ing, -ful, or is more than 2 syllables: add “more” before the adjective. For a superlative: If it’s normal: add “the” before the adjective & “-est” to the end. If it ends with -ed, -ing, -ful, or is more than 2 syllables: add “the most” before the adjective. DO NOT FORGET “THE”!
