20 The Most Common CV Writing Mistakes
Missing or inappropriate contact information – MUST MATCH COVER LETTER Superfluous personal details at the top of the CV Lack of clear section headings/separation of sections Writing in the first person (NO ‘I’ or ‘Me’) Excessive details or not enough details No page numbers Spelling, Grammar & Typos Not Tailoring CV to Position Announcement

21 Tailoring your CV Change the order of content
Research the institution/department to determine what is important to the search committee Identify the key roles and duties you would assume in the position-make sure your descriptions of previous experiences promote similar skills

22 Peer Review Keeping in mind the design principles (C-R-A-P)
we discussed: Switch CV’s with the person next to you Individually review (~3-5 minutes) What is effective? What is ineffective? Is the important information easy to find or did you search for it? Would this go in your “maybe” pile or “no” pile?

23 Get Organized! Date Applied Institution URL (print too!!) Letters of Recommendation Notes 9/1/2016 University of Virginia Complete Associate Prof. leads and directs… 9/15/2016 Copy and paste the full job ad – once it closes, it might disappear from the link you saved!!
