1 University Program Research Engineering

2 Engineering - Civil What is civil engineering?
“discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment” ( Oldest discipline of engineering design buildings and bridges

3 Canadian engineering Universities
There are many engineering schools with civil and many more types of engineering Schools that interest me are:

4 Queen’s University admission requirements
English 12, Calculus 12** or Mathematics 12*, Physics 12 and Chemistry 12. Final grade in English 12 must be 70%

5 University of Calgary 2000 applicants for 750 spaces
Required courses: English Language Arts (ELA) 30-1, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, Pure Math 30, Math 31 (Calculus) High school subjects Required matriculation averages for fall 2015 admission Required matriculation averages for fall 2014 admission ELA 30-1, Pure Mathematics 30, Mathematics 31 (Calculus), Physics 30 and Chemistry 30, or equivalent 86% 87% ELA 30-1, Pure Mathematics 30, Physics 30, Chemistry 30, and another academic matriculation subject from Group A or Group B, or equivalent Note: Not applicable to students who have taken Math 31. 91% 92%

6 Why I like queen’s Lots of options for engineering
1st year of engineering is not specifically one type its a mix of all of them Get to go though 1st year as a group There is even a buddy system

7 Cost of First Year – using Queen’s
Tuition both terms $12,993 Books est. $2000 Housing $13,703 Flights 4 round trips $700 per trip = $2800 Spending Money per month $400 Train trips to Toronto 2 per term $100 Total cost: $34,896

8 Length of engineering degree
4 years for an undergraduate degree 1st year is general engineering Then you pick the type of engineering – I think I want to take Civil Then 3 more years to graduate You have to do a really big project in 4th year called a thesis where you research some topic in detail

9 Courses in the first year program
APSC Practical Engineering Modules – overview of engineering APSC 111- Mechanics a subject which is applicable to everyday engineering problems. APSC Chemistry and Materials I and II - chemistry and uses these fundamentals to gain an understanding of why materials have the characteristics they do. APSC Earth Systems and Engineering Earth System (which encompasses the solid earth, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere), and our interactions with it. APSC Basic Engineering Graphics develop the ability to visualize and communicate three dimensional shapes. APSC Calculus I and II- Parametric curves in two and three dimensions, velocity, acceleration, derivatives of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions APSC Electricity and Magnetism rotational kinematics, dynamics, and and electromagnetic induction. APSC Computer Programming for Engineers theory and practice of computer programming using C as the working language. APSC Introduction to Linear Algebra - Vectors, dot and cross products, lines and planes, projections.

10 Courses in Civil Engineering program

11 Scholarships for Queen’s
I would need to do some more research on all the scholarships and hopefully also ask my councillor at STA for some help but here are some that I have found: AACE International Scholarship Competition 2,000-8,000 AESF Scholarship 1500 usd BC Hydro engineering scholarships BC Excellence Scholarships up to $5000
