Thesis statement: What is Jane’s initial believe regarding ______, what/who shapes her view, what does it change to become, and what is Bronte’s message as a result? E.g. Due to her poor treatment by the Reeds as a child, Jane initially believes family to be unimportant; however, her time with Rochester at Thornfield and her newfound relationship with her cousins, the Rivers, ultimately cause Jane to place a high value on familial bonds, thus implying Bronte’s notion that family is valuable, and even necessary, in becoming a whole individual.

Thesis: Due to her poor treatment by the Reeds as a child, Jane initially believes family to be unimportant; however, her time with Rochester at Thornfield and her newfound relationship with her cousins, the Rivers, ultimately cause Jane to place a high value on familial bonds, thus implying Bronte’s notion that family is valuable, and even necessary, in becoming a whole individual. Topic Sentences: Should stem from thesis (follow order of “reasons”) and respond to essay prompt. Should also cover content of entire paragraph. E.g. Although Jane later comes to know the importance of family, her time at Gateshead with the abusive Reeds initially causes her to conclude that family is unnecessary.

Textual evidence Be certain your quotes truly serve to exemplify your thesis/argument Your analysis should extend beyond one sentence…perhaps even beyond two sentences, depending on how deep you go! Do not simply explain the quote itself, but rather, analyze how it exemplifies your argument. Try not to state the obvious.

While recapping to the reader what happened in the years after Helen died, Jane includes the fact that Miss Temple left Lowood. Regarding Miss Temple’s leave, Jane explains, “From the day she left I was no longer the same: with her gone every settled feeling, every association that had made Lowood in some degree home to me” (Bronte 93). Miss Temple was an anchor for Jane, keeping her nomadic nature at bay and making Lowood feel like home. When Miss Temple leaves, Jane realizes how comforting “family” can be, because Miss Temple changes Jane and teachers her about the importance of familial bonds. Jane’s view of family due to Miss Temple contrasts with her view while she was at Gateshead, which shows just how dynamic Jane’s value of the importance of family is. Essentially, Jane’s view of family changes from being negative to much more positive as a result of her interactions at Lowood.
