5 The History of Cars In 1770’s people tried to make steam cars that ran on the road . They were ok but some didn’t work well because they were really a small train on wheels. In the early 19th Century people tried to make steam cars that ran on road, but they needed a lot of water so they were very heavy. By the 1880’s, they used steam cars but now in 2016 we use petrol and electricity to power the car. By 1905 ,the petrol car were better to drive because they could travel further distances.
