1 LAPD/IISC Seed Money project
Contactless sensing and temperature regulation in an infant incubator for developing countries Prof. Christophe Moser – EPFL/LAPD Prof. H.S. Jamadagni & Dr. Prabhakar – IISc/DESE Department of Electronic Systems Engg, IISc, Bangalore, India

3 GlobalNeoNat project: Reduce infant mortality

4 Swiss mortality Being born is a risky business…
Even in Switzerland! The probability to decease at birth is as high as when you are 70 years old!

5 Infant incubator: not adapted to developing countries
Homemade : Dangerous ! Too complicated – untrained personnel missing parts Personnel not trained to use instruments correctly. Missing parts for repair. End up in waste. Problems with constant availalibity of electrical power (blackout often in Africa) Objective: simple incubator design and temperature regulation  monitor baby temperature

6 - Semester project EPFL Winter 2015/2016: Jonathan Lutz IR Sensor
Seed money project objective: contact-less accurate infant body temperature and wireless transmission to cell phone app - Semester project EPFL Winter 2015/2016: Jonathan Lutz IR Sensor - 7 weeks internship July-Aug 2016, Bengalore: Carlos Nuñez - Wireless temperature transmission to cellphone and user interface

7 Contactless temperature measurement:
Eliminates risks of infection transmission

8 Requirements Cost : low Accuracy : +/- 0.3°C Size :
Fit in an incubator Cleaning : Resistant to bleach or IPA Autonome : No user intervention (e.g pointing) Robustness : No mechanical motion Ease of integration: Compatible Arduino or Raspberry Pi En connaissant les contraintes des marchés cible, un cahier des charges est défini

9 Performance , characterization of an off-the shelf IR sensor
Used to measure temperature from -20 to 300 degrees.

10 Experimental set-up

11 Average measured temperature of a 20.5 oC water bucket
Variance (1,200 measurements)

12 4 sensors of the same type display different
temperatures  individual calibration With 5 seconds measurements, oC for 95% CL or oC for 99.9%. To obtain an absolute temperature with oC with 99.9% confidence Level , the number of measurements is 500 (500 seconds!)

13 3D printed case to hold the hardware
MLX90614 Implementation of contactless temperature sensors inside an infant incubator

14 Home Screen Alerts History Temperature About

15 Alerts The alerts module is intended to show anomalies in the behavior of the babies. Implementation of contactless temperature sensors inside an infant incubator

16 Continuous monitoring: Temperature and Humidity
Start Monitoring Data Stop

17 About History History menu gives the history of the data logged in for the last 24 hours. Implementation of contactless temperature sensors inside an infant incubator

18 Conclusion Need individual sensor calibration
- Currently too long acquisition time - Find pixels with low standard deviation - Reduce noise (collecting more IR power) Wireless Interface BLE 4.x; support available on a wide range of mobile devices Secure data transmission of personal data

19 Future work – Data Analytics
Enough scope to attempt learning Collect large volume of data to train a model Apply learning techniques with a goal to improve the speed
