3 Motivation Prevent transmission of healthcare-associated infections
20,000 deaths per year Importance of hand hygiene Hospital Video Auditing Skin Surface pH Testing Flourescent Powder EMILY -Hospital deaths due to communicable diseases contracted in hospital -Hand hygiene training for hospital staff -Alternatives -Focus on use of commercial products that utilize fluorescence According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-third of all HAIs can be prevented through the implementation of a hand hygiene program — but hand hygiene compliance in healthcare facilities is reported to average only 20 to 50 percent.

4 Existing Products Commerical Products Applications GloGerm Glitterbug
Proper hand washing techniques Demonstrate transmission in mock environment EMILY -GloGerm demonstration -Emphasize that GloGerm simulates bacteria, does not actually attach to bacteria -Increased use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer -Need for GloGerm analog compatible with alcohol-based hand sanitizer

5 Problem Statement Increased use of hand sanitizer
Existing products not effective for training Similar product compatible with hand sanitizer EMILY -Increased use of hand sanitizer instead of traditional soap and water hand washing -Existing products may not be effective in attenuating fluorescence -Need for GloGerm analog compatible with alcohol-based hand sanitizer

6 Client Goals Topical Agent for hand hygiene training
Fluorescent molecule to simulate bacteria Attenuation after hand sanitization Qualitative change UV light wavelength SUSIE -Overarching goal of preventing transmission of hospital-related infections through improved hand hygiene training -Intrinsic fluorescence of molecule safe for application to skin -Fluorescence should be attenuated with application of alcohol-based hand sanitizer -Trainees should observe visible change in fluorescence to indicate hand cleanliness -Eventually tag bacteria with topical agent for real-time auditing of staff hand hygiene…this requires spectrofluoremeter -Spectrofluorometers: large, permanent equipment -Goal: portable, hand-held, real-time measurement with quantitative data -For staff surveillance and research on hand hygiene and transmission using quantitative data -This semester will focus on topical agent that simulates bacteria!!!

7 Product Requirements Change in fluorescence with EtOH FDA approval
Skin application safety Existing patent Commercial products Solubility in H20 Cost

8 Experimental Design SUSIE
-obtain sample  cuvette  spectral collection  OH addition  spectral collection  data analysis Note assumptions: -Cuvette simulates hand -Ethanol utilized in OH addition instead of ethanol-based hand sanitizer -dissolution of some samples difficult Currently experimenting at excitation of 350 nm…specific ranges to be determined following additional testing…targeting UV light wavelength ranges because of clinical relevance of training
