Essential Question Cornell Notes: Page22 Title: The Cell Membrane
What is the structure of the cell membrane and how does it allow the cell to regulate passage of materials?

Standard B4.B: investigate and explain cellular processes, including homeostasis, energy conversions, transport of molecules, and synthesis of new molecules. Essential Question: How can I describe diffusion across the cell membrane

All cells are surrounded by a thin, flexible barrier known as a cell membrane.

The two main functions of the cell membrane are: 1) to regulate what enters and leaves the cell and 2) to provide protection and support.

The composition of cell membranes is a double-layered sheet called a lipid bilayer.
DRAW THIS!

This double layer is also sometimes referred to as the “phospholipid bilayer”
Hydrophillic = attracts water “water loving” Hydrophobic = repels water “water fearing”

HYDROPHOBIC…WATER FEARING…REPELS WATER!!!!

Analogy time… A cell membrane is like a ___________ because _________________________. Protein pumps are like the _____________ in a ___________ because ________________.

The lipid bilayer will allow most small molecules to diffuse in and out but not large or charged molecules.

So, if the cell needs these larger or charged molecules to function, how are they able to get through?

The Cell Membrane: It’s not just Lipids
The Cell Membrane: It’s not just Lipids. It surrounds the entire cell and also contains special protein and carbohydrate compounds.

Carbohydrates are attached to many proteins embedded on the outside of the bilayer. The carbohydrates allow individual cells to identify one another.

Proteins are embedded in the lipid bilayer of most cell membranes
Proteins are embedded in the lipid bilayer of most cell membranes. Proteins form channels or pumps that help to move materials across the cell membrane.

The Cell Membrane: These proteins perform some very special functions for the cell.

The proteins form special pathways or channels for larger particles

The many types of molecules found in cell membranes are not stationary but constantly move around the cell in what’s called a fluid mosaic model.

Many cells also produce a strong supporting layer around the membrane known as a cell wall.

Analogy time (part 2)… Cell membranes are like _____________ while cell walls are like __________________ because ___________________________________ _____________.

If a substance is able to diffuse across a membrane, the membrane is said to be permeable to it. If a substance cannot diffuse across a membrane, the membrane is said to be impermeable to it.

Selectively permeable means that some substances can pass across while others cannot. Biological membranes are selectively permeable.
