(1 minute alone) Think about the meaning of chapter 4’s title: “Painted Faces and Long Hair”. What does it symbolize? (2 min. partners) Discuss the significance + be ready to share out.

In box #1 Divide in 2 parts: symbol + allegory What’s a symbol? An ordinary object, event, person, or place to which we attach an extraordinary meaning/significance 2. What’s an allegory? a story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves has two levels of meaning: the literal (obvious), and the symbolic/figurative. overall purpose = teach a moral lesson TIP: circle that word ALL in the word ALLegory to remember that it’s all the book/story in its entirety that is a symbolic, therefore an allegory
