QuarkStar is a startup whose members have included a significant number of the pioneers of solid-state lighting. Lighting itself is a global industry with revenues over $100 billion/year, but has been fundamentally disrupted by the introduction of the LED.
Despite the cost savings of energy usage, the increasingly small size of LEDs coupled to higher brightness leads to many new problems such as increased glare and higher initial cost.
