1 Day 37 – Pokemon Argument, Adjectives and Adverbs

2 Objectives Analyze an argument used in a nonfiction text.
Construct a counter argument based on the author’s stance Discuss and analyze the arguments posed by other students. Homework: Finish any assignments that were not completed in class. Last day to turn in work is Friday! Midterm next week!

8 Adjectives

9 Adjectives An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Example:
An adjective answers: What kind? Which one? How many? Example: happy dog tired boy seven girls

10 Articles are the adjectives a, an, and the
Articles are the adjectives a, an, and the. A and an are indefinite articles. The is the definite article. Possessive pronouns, such as my and our, can be considered adjectives because they modify nouns. Similarly, possessive forms of nouns, such as Roger’s and the captain’s, can also be considered adjectives. A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter. Cervantes was a Spanish writer. The Korean restaurant is very popular.

17 AN ADVERB: Modifies an active verb or a verb phrase by expressing manner, place, time, degree, or number.

18 TYPES OF ADVERBS: Simple Interrogative Negative

19 EXAMPLES: SIMPLE: She moved quietly. (Manner and tell how)
I waited there for an hour. (Place and tell where) You may leave soon. (Time, tells when) I called you once. (Number, tells how many) He sat very still. (Degree, tells how much)

20 Interrogative Adverb Introduces a sentence that asks a question
where, when, why and how

21 EXAMPLES: Interrogative: When will you return?
How is the trunk being sent?

22 Negative Adverb Denies or contradicts a statement
no, not , never, only, scarcely and hardly Note: two negative adverbs should not be used together.

23 EXAMPLES: Negative - I can scarcely believe my eyes. ( correct)
- I haven’t no more sea shells. (incorrect)

26 1. The weight lifter grunted and groaned trying to lift the heavy barbell.
2. The hungry boy ate a juicy hamburger and a tossed salad. 3. My little brother loves Chinese food. 4. Where did you get that beautiful coat? 5. The designers changed the basic design of the popular model. 6. A good hiking boot needs a sturdy sole. 7. We watched the little silvery fish jump completely out of the water.

28 1. The morning had been rainy.
2. The sky was dark and gloomy. 3. I sat in my cramped office doing stupid mundane tasks. 4. I glanced around my plain desk looking for a few papers when the phone rang. 5. My friend was on the other line asking if I could meet him to discuss his clumsy girlfriend. 6. I told him that clumsy girlfriends were not very amusing.

29 7. My friend insisted that this story was very entertaining.
8. So, I met him for late-night coffee after my long day at work. 9. He told me how his girlfriend managed to dye his dog a curious shade of purple. 10. "A purple dog?" I asked. 11. "Yes, she was trying to use industrial dye to color one of her shirts when her small dog jumped into the washer." 12. Because she had not noticed the silly dog in the washer, she poured the dye into the tank and flipped it "on."

30 13. The little white dog soaked in the purple dye for more than a few minutes before the agitator scared it. 14. The purple dog then yelped and the clumsy girlfriend came to the rescue.

35 When finished… Write a constructed response in which you take a side and address the following issue: Is Pokémon a positive force in the modern world or does it have a negative impact on people? Make sure you keep in mind: Each country’s culture Past experiences Current trends

36 NOW Get into your 4 person groups and discuss your argument. Discuss your position and come up with a unified response. Be prepared to join another group and address your group’s point of view.

37 Closure – 3, 2, 1 Write the 3 types of adverbs.
Write two things that adjectives describe. Write one question you still have concerning adjectives and adverbs.
